Frank, shoot and post a pic of that truck from the rear, I'd like to see how those meats look from behind.
I'm toying with the idea of switching to 4-link, adding dually fenders, having dually wheels widened to 9" and running a pair of 295's on each side. I think my 565 should be in the neighborhood of 800hp N/A, building it to take 400hp shot of spray.

Here's a few of mine. Coil-overs instead of leafs, 4 link, narrowed rear-end (44" end to end), 15x14 Convo-Pro wheels with 4 1/2" backspace. With the 31x18.5 Hoosier radials (18" sectional width, 14.5" tread) there is 2 3/4" between tire and fender lip. The Hoosier 32x14 slicks (19.9 sectional width, 16.3" tread) there is just shy of 1" between tire and fender lip.

all i have to say is, i think its great wen our little n/a 383 super gas tube chassis firebird goes up against a 600 plus ci and gets the win light, people come up in the pits and ask what motor we have in it, and the look on their faces are priceless when you say an n/a small block

Whoa, guys, ain't trying to start a big block vs small block thing...I just prefer big blocks for big torque. There's a reason that Top Fuel, Pro Stock, etc. all run 500 cubic inch big blocks...'cause the rules say they can't run bigger! The initial remark about needing a big block wasn't necessarily directed at the truck's owner but at all the guys "back in the day" that ran big honkin' tires with an anemic crate 350 under the hood. That ain't ProStreet to me, it's all show and no go.
And my money says more than one big block has got the win light against that 383...there's a lot more to winning than having the most powerful engine, anybody who's raced very much knows that as I'm certain that you do. Running super gas ain't no picnic, y'all have spent countless hours dialing that car in, racing has to be a passion at that level, nothing like grudge matches at the test-n-tune. I'm guessing you're running an index which would mean those mountain motors are detuned or running a throttle stop to keep 'em in the bracket. A good tuner is as valuable as a good engine builder at that level, IMHO.
Nowadays, the LSX engine family is making it's mark and big block or early gen small block, both are learning that these newfangled LS powerplants are capable of making some insane numbers. Talk about pi$$ing a few folks off, many Mustangs are racing with LS engines between the frame rails, it sho 'nuff gets the Ford guys' feathers ruffled when they see what's making their beloved Rustains fast

If I were you I'd just resell the parts you got a deal on (for more) and spend it on something else. You may have gotten a deal this time, but what about when your son needs new tires the next time? Those fatties aren't cheap.

I did the leaf spring trick on mine. The width of the frame rails is ~34" so make sure your tires are going to have enough clearance when they are mounted to the rear end. I'll warn you that you will be sick of rivets by the time you are done lol

Thanks Rob. Yeah I took the spring from the right side and mounted it on the inside of the left frame rail and vice versa. I had to box the rails where the mounts go. The wheels are 15x14. I'll have to look up the backspacing. The wheels were custom built for another vehicle so I didn't get to choose the backspacing. I narrowed the rear end enough for them to fit my truck. The tires are 32x14 Hoosier slicks. They are just an old set I used for mockup.

I've been wondering about this spring swap idea too. Another idea would be to get some spring mount tabs to mount the front of the leaf spring under the frame rail (ala S10 style) and then hang the shackles out back like the rear of the front spring on the 4x4's. Or maybe use the slider style of spring mount from AFCO/Speedway Motors for the rear. Anyone know how those would ride on the street?

To "tub" mine originally I moved the leafs inside the frame. Didn't like the ride or traction issues, so instead of caltracs and better shocks and possibly a sway bar I went with a 4 link and coil overs. Here's a couple pics. 15x14 welds on 31x16 mt sr radials.
