Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project
75 ChevyGuy,
I only use duplicolor products...I've tried about everything out there and in my opinion, they are the best... My process...take whatever you are going to paint and scrub it good (stiff plastic brush) with plenty of any brand grease fighting dishsoap...wash it off and let it dry... then take Dups. grease and wax remover and wipe down everything that you are going to paint (I let it sit for about 2 minutes), then wipe off the excess with a soft, lint-free cloth and let it thouroughly dry...oh yea, use the brush again, especially in grooves and crevices!!!! then take Dups. Adhesion Promoter and follow the directions - the key is multiple light even coats...then take the color of choice of Dups Vinyl and Fabric paint (again, follow directions), multiple, light coats (timing between is usually 3-4 minutes and you want the previous coat to be slightly tacky when you put the next one on)...the optimum temp is around 70 degrees with little moisture in the air... after it is dry to the touch I usually put it in my bathroom with a space heater (not directly on the part - just to get the room good and warm) and let it cook for several hours...I usually wait about 24 hours before re-install... ****if you are going Black (again, MY opinion), go with the flat black...it has a slight sheen and looks great...the shiny black is way too shiny...worse than armor all... I am doing the dash today and will document with pics...hope this helped and please hit me up with any questions.... |

Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project
Not an encouraging day...started to dissassemble the 396 and am just a wee bit discouraged...it may be worse off than I imagined...it's going to the machine shop on monday for a nice little bath to see what we can see....

Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project
I knew it would be rusty..but aslong as tha block & heads are not cracked..it can be saved. Tha dash came out nice. How many cans did it take to do tha dash @ doors.

Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project
Dru,
1st, thanks 2nd, I've tried many brands and the duplicolor seems to hold out the best...I've used on vinyl seats and it held like it was original...it says to let it cure for 24 hours...I've found that if I stick it a bathroom and "cook" the room with a space heater it hardens very well I haven't seen it wear or dull from normal use, however, I've occasionally scraped it with something hard and it left a scuff mark, but the old color did not show through...one little spray from the rattle can and the scuff went away and it blended so that you couldn't tell anything had happened...I described "my" method earlier in the thread...there are probably different/better ways to do it, but this has always worked for me... way cheaper than buying a replacement piece!!! Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project
Pop,
yea, it is, without question, rusty! but the heads and block seem solid...will know for sure after a nice bath tomorrow...will keep you updated... the dash and door panels took 1 can of adhesion promoter and 2 cans of color...they reccommend 3 coats of each...I did four... That dash turned out amazing! Alittle shot blasting on the block and it will look good as new! What did the machine shop say about it?

Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project
Good Day!!! got the intake manifold off (with a little help from the cutting torch) and the heads...a lot of surface rust, but no pitting and the pistons looked brand new (once we cleaned the crap off of em)... the odometer on the car read 16,000 miles and from the looks of things I believe it...
got the the oil pan off and things looked even better underneath... can't find a crack anywhere, but that doesn't mean there isn't one hiding...didn't have time to get it to the machine shop today...gonna take it on Wednesday...here are some pics...

Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project
Friends and Neighbors...I am also upgrading the sound system...nothing crazy (just enough to annoy the blue hairs at stop lights)...but I don't want to cut into the doors and all that crap...I found a set of 3.5 speakers that are made by infinity that fit into the stock locations under the dash (not the center cutout, but the one's on the side)...they are around $75 bucks (which may sound like alot, but not for infifnity)...they should be here this week and I'll post pics...
here is the direct link.... http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1083032...y+car+speakers

Re: Annabelle's transformation 85 C10 project
Ok...update time...heads and block are all good but need to have some new fangeld sand blast thing done to em to get em clean inside and out...
I am probably going to farm out the rebuild to a guy I know who is a 396 expert...would have more fun doing it myself but I lost most of my tools and equipment in a really fun divorce a year ago...plus I'm working on my Masters and working full time, so time is limited... with the list of goodies that I have chosen for the rebuild, my buddy assures me it will pull 400+hp...we will see... 3.5 infinity speakers came in today and are installed...had to do some bracket modification, but I fully expected that...they sound awesome... first pics are of the speakers and the second set is old dash vs new dash...and let me tell you...it is a trick geting the dash back in with without cracking it...not sure how, but I did it...let me know what you think...
