When you register a YOM plate, (or Year of Manufacture, which is the correct legal term) the DMV sends you two little metal tabs or extensions that attach to your rear plate. You are supposed to put all current stickers on those tabs and leave the vintage plates alone. Of course, when you get home with the stuff, you can do what you want.
Where do you get the stickers?

Re: painting a new lic plate OG black and yellow??

Hey guys, Here in NC we can run any old plate that is in any shape as long as its a NC plate and the same year as the vehicle. DMV ask to keep your regular tag in the glovebox so if you get pulled over you can show that tag. I was at a car show last weekend and found a nice original plate for my 69 chevelle so ill run it when I get that project done.

Re: painting a new lic plate OG black and yellow??

here in NC you dont register the old plates or put stickers on them. Just keep your current plate up to date and in the car at all times.

Re: painting a new lic plate OG black and yellow??

you can restore these old plates and nobody would ever be able to tell. They sell a clear flat reflective clear coat to put on them depending on how they were painted each year.

Re: painting a new lic plate OG black and yellow??

here is the link.
http://www.licenseplates.tv/california-147.html

cutting that plate up and running it is a felony. running the above linked plates is also a felony.
with that being said my other car is a 51 and those plates clear are very expensive. i keep the og blue one in my trunk just in case. i think as long as your not being a retartd or being rude to the officer you would be fine.

and black mopar have yours restored bro you will be way better off.i can get you a number if you want.

Ebay or swap meets. Usually the better vendors that sell vintage license plates have them or can get them. repros are a bit cheaper.

Thanks, just one last stupid question for the night. Were black plates issued for 1969?

Yeah, that's because in January of this year, the State of California put a Cease and Desist Order on him to stop reproducing California license plates.

Just another thing by the state to keep us from having fun out here!

Slick idea, but you have to be really careful. Especially if you get pulled over by a cop who is versed on the numbers and digit sequencing of black plates.

Here's a simple breakdown:
Black Plates 1963-1969: 3 letters, then a space, 3 numbers (i.e: ABC 111), unless it was a Commercial plate (truck), then it was 5 numbers and a single letter (i.e: I55 123). Also, you could get a black Commercial plate up until early 1972.

Blue Plates 1969-1982: 3 numbers, then a space, then 3 letters (i.e: 111 ABC). In 1980, they went to 7 digit plates. In 1982, they eliminated the blue plates and went to white reflective plates.

If a cop really knows what he's looking at, you can get ticketed for having a truck with a non-commercial plate on it.

So, if you want to put a black plate on your truck, make sure you find a commercial plate to start with. It'll be easy to spot....all numbers and one letter at the beginning.

A little trivia: the current commercial plates have all letters and one number!

Actually you can run a non commercial plate on your truck but if you have so much as an old soda can in the bed they can site you.

Re: painting a new lic plate OG black and yellow??

If I'm not mistaken, you have to have the commercial plate unless you have a cap on the bed(?) But then again, they made me PAY for a commercial plate when I registered the truck, but my plate looks just like every other plate out here. I have to agree, as much as I like CA, and I really do like it up here in the desert especially, I think they've gotten a little full of themselves up there in the big house in Sacramento. Getting out of debt, one speeding ticket and one commercial license fee at a time...

Hmmm, maybe I should put my CA black plates up for sale sometime. They are the original plates from my 1965 Impala...
