I was in your position last year and went the BB. and was glad I did. I based my decision on the weight of my truck and went for torque vs HP.

Couldn't say why it was more, just was. Rebuild kit from northern auto was about double the price, flexplate was about 30% more, had to pay shipping for some parts I had to special order cause no one out here has anything that is 400 specific. I'm maybe not double, since the head work would have been the same, but overall I'm a lot more into it than a 350. Less than a 383 though, I'm sure.

Put a 475 big block from him in a '67 Chevelle last year & it runs great!

What machine work needs to be done to a 350 block to get it ready for a 383 larger stroke crank? What other parts need to be changed for the conversion?

If you are looking for serious power, always go big block. If you are planning 80% street use and 20% at the track, BUILD A SMALL BLOCK!!

Personally, I'll never build another small block...

Why stroker? Have you ever driven a fresh 350? You need to try it with vortex heads . What are your plans for the truck? What do you already have there as far as parts for the engines?. Have you ever driven a fresh 400sbc?

a 383 will give you about 50 more ft-lbs of torque than a 350, and 25 more HP than a 350...
A fresh 180 HP 350 is still a 180 HP 350.... there are much better heads than Vortech heads these days....

What's your actual engine build budget? And don't forget - if you build a hot street motor, you're also gonna need to at least do a shift kit & better torque converter in your transmission to compliment it!

Beat everything on the street? Hope you have pockets full of money 'cause that's what it's going to take, especially in a truck. There are N/A Camaros and TransAms out there running high 9's, that'll take somewhere around 900hp to get that done with a truck.
Start with a strong 383 and work your way up from there. Build something that's reliable and affordable and fun, worry about beating everyone on the street later, once you've got some wrenching and tuning under your belt.

And "beating everyone on the street" is going to require being able to hook that power up without endlessly spinning your tires too!!! But realistically, you are pretty much NEVER going to run into someone with 900hp driving on the street.....

i want something to make everyone jealous and in my town i have alot of people who say someone in their family has something better then everyone elses so i want to get my truck beefed up better than what they got and then some and line em up! just to prove them wrong and to tell them i built that and when im older i can look back and remember their faces

You're never going to beat everyone on the street. If you want to beat everyone, then build a race purpose vehicle and go to the track and win some money to pay for all the things it's going to take to pursue this dream of yours.

9 sec N/A Trans Ams and Camaros? I've never seen one, but I've heard unicorns exist.

There's ALWAYS someone faster on the street. Count on it.
Lighter cars don't need 900hp, plus with a good suspension setup, they'll hook while you're spinning. You're not going to get anywhere close with a small block, probably not even with a big block.
How fast of a car have you ever driven? To be perfectly honest, most guys mess their pants at around the 11 second mark, that'll push your eyeballs back in your skull and make you pinch a hole in your seat! And with a 4000lbs truck, that'll take about 600rwhp...again, you ain't gonna get there with any kind of streetable engine, that's 750 at the crank which is a horsey 496 that'll take race fuel and won't want to idle below about 1200rpm.
And there are plenty of 11-second cars on the street, they're all a lot lighter than your truck which makes it a whole lot cheaper and easier than it will be for you.
Get into the 12's first. Baby steps, man, baby steps.

Let me put it to you this way - in my '07 Dodge Ram 2WD CCSB that had the 5.9L Cummins & G56 manual (with numerous mods) I was putting a tad over 425hp & 863ft/lbs to the ground. I had a set of CalTrac bars on it & wider than stock tires - launching it at about 3,200rpm on 3rd I could walk away from a lot of vehicles on the street - especially the obnoxious little imports!!!
Your truck when finished will be a LOT lighter than this one was, so you won't need near that much power. You can VERY easily get 450hp at the crank out of a 383 & it'll feel VERY fast!!! It'll throw you back in the seat too!!!

Then why are you messing with a truck? Find a Vega, Monza, Duster etc and build it up. You'll get alot farther with less money invested.

im talking old truck on old truck yea everyone around here understands their aint no old truck gonna keep up with a new lightweight car but if i can at least keep up or go really fast everyone is impressed basically all they are looking for is a truck that will haul ass when the light turns green

Agreed, think you're shooting WAY too far ahead trying to aim for a 10-second pickup off the bat.... That's a lot of investment to get it there & not something that's gonna drive nice on the street without EFI to let it idle ok. A true 10-second car isn't gonna be one that's gonna be your daily driver - you're gonna have to compromise to have something you're happy with daily, but is still respectable at the track or on the street "stop light-to-stop light".
