I had mine shortened and balanced for $90. He could have charged whatever he wanted and I would of had to pay it.

Re: Driveline prices? Wow
$100 an hour for any professional work up here. $189 doesn't sound unreasonable. 1 hour to cut and re-weld. half hour to balance? Just a wee high perhaps but not overall a bad deal.

Re: Driveline prices? Wow
It's not too difficult to build a driveshaft. I tack weld the yokes in place and install it into the truck then turn the driveshaft with a dial indicator against it to make sure I've got it on the money. After that remove and weld it solid. Next time I do one I'll do an FAQ on it.
I don't buy into the perception that the guy behind the counter is a professional and worthy of my hard earned dollars. Some are of course, but the average worker out there nowadays couldn't care less and has no sense of pride in his finished product.

I guess I'm not as optimistic as you. The rank and file are full of lazy dirtbags out there.

Re: Driveline prices? Wow
I guess prices around here arent bad. I got a new tube and one new yoke on my jeep shaft for 140 balanced. They charge 75 to cut one shorter and balance. They Do great quality work they stand behind.

Check with local Four wheel drive shops, up here they seem to do it for cheaper.

Re: Driveline prices? Wow
The pole vault deal can happen.I had a friend with a monte carlo back in high school. It broke the front u joint and the shaft dug in enough to make his car roll over side ways and land on the roof in the ditch.I was with the tow truck and saw the results.Last shaft I cut and fit like I wanted. then carried to the shop with 2 new joints. They welded and balanced, installed new joints for $65

Re: Driveline prices? Wow
If you're concerned about it breaking just support it.
Personally I cannot imagine doing, or having anything done, for under $100. I don't know where people find these deals, unless it's in very small towns.

Re: Driveline prices? Wow
Back in 2006 I had to replace the tube on my 66 Econo's driveshaft all they did was replace the 17" tube, paint and balance it set me cost me $130.
I told them the length of tube to weld in, they refused to take the number I told them so I had to measure the LOA of the shaft i did 27 1/2" overall. I went the next day to pick it up and install it. they built it 27 1/2 colapsed down (it has a slide yoke) so it didn't fit had to miss 2 days of work and they finally put a 17" tube in
