Re: 6lug rear to 5 lug rear

Yes, when converting the axle flanges from 6 lug to 5 lug, you should always plug the original holes. It is best to cut small round steel plugs and weld them in rather than try and fill them completely with weld.

Re: 6lug rear to 5 lug rear

I have an 86 chevy long bed parts truck. I haven't measured it yet but wondering if the width of the rearend is the same or close to a 65 chevy C10.

Thanks Jeff.

Re: 6lug rear to 5 lug rear

On my 66 truck (stock rearend) I pulled the axles and drums. The machine shop drilled axles and drums for the price of $80 total. They also turned the end of the axle hub down, but they bolted the drum to the axle before machining.

Cut all the leaf spring bracketry off & weld on the truck arm mounting pads. Depending on ride height & wheel choice, you'll need to verify back spacing will work.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: 6lug rear to 5 lug rear

You'll also need to weld on a panhard bar mount. Unless you drop the rear a considerable amount, then you will want the panhard bar mount on the right trailing arm or just above it.

'New' trucks aren't wider, the disc brake system is. They just increased the width of the rear end to keep things consistent. The a-arms are similar in length.

Old re-drilled axles = older OE axles w/years of wear. New replacement swap axles = stronger + zero wear.

Re: 6lug rear to 5 lug rear

So, if i swap out my axles in my 1966, to aftermarket 5 lug. I will need drums from a 1971-1974?......RIGHT?? Are those the only year drums?

Re: 6lug rear to 5 lug rear

The '71-'72 drums will work, but you can also use the narrow drums (2" wide shoes) from up into the mid 70's.....'74 or so. Starting in '73, wider rear brakes (2.75" wide shoes) were available, but the backing plates have to be changed to be able to convert to the wider, better rear brakes.
