Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Thought I recognized those tell-tale pack rat 'leavings'.
Looking nice and clean now.

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
I'm South, pretty close to the Bass Pro, opposite end of town wouldn't you know!
Got the inside cleaned up this morning and it looks good too! If I find the get up and go, I'll start on the exterior once the sun gets down a bit further.

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
My Dad could not find the title to the Suburban, thought we were going to have to do a title search. While cleaning the interior, under the drivers seat, guess what I found! Just need to get back up to Utah or mail it then I can drive it legally anyways
The major cleaning is done, thank goodness I would much prefer turning wrenches!

The temp gauge quite working so.....
It's on my list. The tack does not work either. Electrical repairs start tomorrow.

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Thanks capev86, my thoughts exactly!
I got the electrical manageable , all gauges are working except the temp, just have not got to it since the aftermarket one is working. I got a temporary registration, been getting it ready to be smoged, plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, oil, filter, fuel filter and rebuilt the carb, all today. I'm beat but she is running like a scalded ape, smog should be a snap!

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
I think 1967 is the cut off year. Just a way for DMV to make money it has to be done every fricken year. Whats worse about five years ago Diesels had to start being smoged, in order to smog a diesel you have to find a testing facility with a dyno.

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
We have to smog test 1975 and later cars, but it's all done by state owned facilities, no private checks. Every 2 yrs, and it's not a problem for newer cars most the time. Fortunately my wife has the only newer car. My 3 cars are 1946, 1969, and 1971, so I don't do it at all.

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Failed smog today, carburetor a little rich...what a pain.
I'll try leaning it down and see what happens, luckily I have a pretty good assortment of metering rod and jets!

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
careful with leaning it out. don't run smaller jets than it was supposed to have. stupid ethanol crap they sell us now makes for leaner running. my 72 cb350 is having problems with that due the dinosaur "piss" we are getting. had the top end redone with port and valve work and it ran fine afterwards (still had regular gas back then), so i know its the gas mucking it all up now.
they stopped doing smog checks in maine many years ago. and i will be banging on every (state) government door the moment they get the bright idea to re institute it. i was ready to cry rape when they bumped the inspection price from $6 to $12. if it is old enough not to have a catalytic converter it should be exempt! Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Thanks for the heads up capev86, I'm hoping the next size up on the metering rods will do it. At least it's only takes a few minutes to do it, I'll have to buy the size I need, just don't have the right ones in my assortment.

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Just an update, the Burb is licensed and I bought new shoes for her too! Been driving the snot out of it, brings back a lot of good memories
Time to lower the suspension! Trying to figure out the best way to go? 2.5 drop spindles for sure, maybe another inch with lower front springs and air bags in the back or all fours? Any input would be great, I do want to be able to tow, so I really don't care to C-Notch the frame, I have a boat and car trailer that will be used allot. Coming along!

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Cleaning is officially over! With 40 years of old grease, oil, mud and road grime on the undercarriage, I started cleaning with a scraper...it would have taken forever! A good friend graciously offered me his lift and power washer, I spent two full days on it and it turned out great, about as close to a frame off the burb is going to see!
Here is a picture of the front a-arm, could not even see zert fittings! Here are a few after the power washer did it's magic. Lacquer thinner & break cleaner bath, 10 cans of undercoat and 8 cans of rustolium. I also needed 1/2" spacers for the rear wheels and could not find 1/2 inch longer studs, luckily I have a lath in my garage and turned down some over-sized studs. AIR BAGS NEXT WEEKEND

Re: New Guy, Old Suburban
Just got the suspension done! I'm so happy to have that job over with
The rear axle hits the exhaust hump if I try to lower the rear were I want it, I'll have to get the exhaust pipe re-worked to set the stance that I want. It's getting pretty close even without the exhaust rework! Handles fantastic also.
