Re: Chevy 4.3 Liter V6 in one of our trucks
Ask yourself how long will it take to recover the cost of the swap from the 350 (way better than ANY 305 for MPG) to the 4.3 TPI. Yes, there were Q-jeted 4.3 in vans, fullsized pickups (before 87), and cars. The 305's small bore makes the 350 a better mileage engine, everytime I have dumped the 305 for a 350 the added torque made that vehicle drive so much better, less throttle equalled better around town mileage. If your 350 gets poor mileage then work on the tune up, check the EPA mileage difference between a 5.0 truck and a 5.7, it is like 1 or 1 MPG. You could go the lower cost route by tuning up the 350, along with adding a vacuum gauge, then some careful throttle application will give great dividends for little to cash outlay.

Re: Chevy 4.3 Liter V6 in one of our trucks
Do it. These trucks really arent that heavy depending on options. I like seeing different builds. The 4.3 is a good engine, still used in the new body style trucks. Use the fuel injection and overdrive trans with 3.42s or 3.73s depending on your driving style. I bet you will get pretty good mileage and performance.

Re: Chevy 4.3 Liter V6 in one of our trucks
a 4.3 with a 700r4 or the 4e60 and 3.42 gears will get up and go, and get good mpg..
dropping it in a old truck with a th350 and 3,08 gears it be a dog.. |

Re: Chevy 4.3 Liter V6 in one of our trucks
The 4.3 is a good engine, I have a 09 extended cab with one and that is a much more massive vehicle. How much lighter is a extended cab s-10 than a standard cab swb c-10. I wouldn't think it would be that much, gear it right keep the fuel injection and a overdrive transmission it shouldn't be lacking for anything in everyday traffic. Dules sound good on them IMO.

Re: Chevy 4.3 Liter V6 in one of our trucks
i have to add that these trucks are small anyways compared to nowdays and my wife's 02 GMC has a 4.3 been good and runs down the road just as good as my V-8 trucks maybe better in everyday driving.

Re: Chevy 4.3 Liter V6 in one of our trucks
Yeah, my 68 looks like a minitreuck compared to my f250. I wasn't thinking there would be too much of a weight difference.

Re: Chevy 4.3 Liter V6 in one of our trucks
The fuel injected 4.3 is one heck of a good little engine. My son has one in a full size 2000 silverado. It gets around 20 mpg with the 4l60E overdrive, and has decent power for normal everyday driving. It all depends on what you want to use the truck for. It's not a hot rod engine, and I wouldn't recommend it for heavy towing, but for just a daily driver, it's not bad.

Re: Chevy 4.3 Liter V6 in one of our trucks
Would any of you guys think of putting in a late model 4.3/700r4 combo in a 1/2 ton 67-72 suburban that would be used for cruising and daily driving? I don't need to go fast, but i don't want it to be a gutless burb. thx.

Re: Chevy 4.3 Liter V6 in one of our trucks
I think a F/I 4.3 in a C10 would be very comparable to the same engine in an S10. I think a burb would be a little heavy. The 4.3 has decent torque and would pair well with 3.42 (non od) or 3.73 (od) to get your mileage. It is definitely a much cheaper option than one of the LS series engines. As others have said, there are other options for more power, but I don't think the 4.3 would be "under powered". I would definitely look for a F/I motor.

Re: Chevy 4.3 Liter V6 in one of our trucks
I just finished a 2000 4.3 5 speed swap in a '77 Luv(I know it not a 67-72). It feel like it gonna be FAST. I think they were 190 hp. Thats more than a 307.
