New look Glove Box Lid

What clear coat did you use? I've heard some people say that clearing bare metal can discolor and leave a yellowish brown color.

Your right that can happen, I used Holts Dupli Color rattle can with Acrylic .

I've now done the ash tray and had already tackled the door panels at the same time as the glove box but wasn't going to post em as i'm not to happy with the end result....they had rusted and were damaged on the outer edges and corners, even with a massive amount of grinding and sanding the pitting was too deep.

Anyway here they are for what they're worth.

Love it! Can you post what you're using to remove the paint? Is it something you're putting on an angle grinder?

My lid is chrome, but it's horribly scratched...do you think the disk will remove it? I'm going to the yard tomorrow, so if not, I'll just pick up another one while I'm there.

I wouldn't bother with the chrome one tubbed, you would need a metal grinding disc and then you would be taking pieces outta the lid as well, the beauty of the stripping disc's are that you loose nothing off the body just paint, they're primarily for the car resto trade, so pick up an old lid if you can.

Thanks eight!...I have to find one for my angle grinder...I've used one on my cordless drill, but the batter doesn't last long enough. I just wanted to make sure it was the same thing. I can't wait now!

I was thinking about how to do that too. To get the gauges recessed you could have some steel rings machined on a lathe that had a step flange on the top and were tapered inward to mimic the look of the stock dash.

The rings could be made to accept the stock size of common aftermarket gauges. The rings could be clamped in place from the back side or even welded to the back of the panel for a seamless look on the front face. The stepped flange on the machined rings would hide the cut line on the lid so it would not be visible or need to be perfect. You could even weld mounting studs to the back of the lid so aftermarket gauges could be mounted from behind.

With a fabricated support & reflector housing any other factory gauge could be made to fit as well. Third gen F-body gauges are very plentiful and inexpensive too. This is the route I am looking at going.

If you cut the glove box door to match the stock configuration of a third gen factory cluster then the hard fabrication of the reflector & support housing is eliminated. All you need are the machined gauge panel rings in the right sizes to match the cluster of choice.

Here is an 82-89 Camaro cluster set in the dash of my 67. You can see it fits & lines up pretty well and could be made to work. You can find speedos from 85, 115 to 140 mph and even get 4, 6 & 8 cylinder tachs. The 4 cylinder are hard to get but would work for an LSx swap.

If I had access to a mill & lathe I would have this done already.
