Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??
Bruce's right- sell the potential! I've bought a few cars/trucks without the ol' lady knowing but when I turn them over and make some money off them I would tell her and give her a stack of green to play with. Now she doesn't worry at all, but is happy to see them come home cause she knows the outcome.

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??
I never have had to hide anything I just buy and thats it however my wife plays the trick of he old "I bought it along time ago" you just never noticed like clothes, shoes make up and things for the kids specially the little one....
Big $$ Items I give her heads up that a transporter is going to be droping off a vehicle/boat motorcycle etc other than that it is an open season.

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??
Never have asked any of my wives.
I work hard. Buy what i want. If they didn't like it, they knew where the door was. None of my purchases got me divorced. It was other crap.

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??
2 years ago my son and I were invited to go fishing on a guy's boat. the son and I fell in love with boating. we convinced her we need a boat and she agreed, "when we have the money". after finding 3 candidates on CL and she delayed I decided to take matters into my own hands. one day I took some cash I had saved in my WDK account and bought my 65 Johnson. I litterally got yelled at for that one until she found out I had the money.
I am now waiting for her to find out about the Snap-On tools I bought for use at home. in my defense she laid out a monthly tool budget 4 years ago (after I surprised her with a new $8000 box). I stay within that amount so all is fine, right?

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??
A Playboy collection. It didn't turn out very well though.
I went to an auction one time because they had a "complete" Playboy collection from late 50's through the 90s. I had mentioned it to my wife, but she wasn't too keen on the idea (naturally). My rationale was that if the right editions were there, I could sell those off individually and make a lot more money. Nothing else was said of it. I snuck out and went to the auction, won it, and was standing in line to pay. All of the sudden my wife comes storming through the auction center making a straight line towards me. People were clearing out of her way. She gave me the third degree about how there were better things we could be spending our money on, etc. She wasn't mad because it was a "bunch of naked chicks," but rather the money that was spent. She got over it, of course, but it cost me a new dining room table and chairs (and not a cheap one either!). Sometimes it's easier to get forgiveness than it is permission

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??
^^That makes good sense. It's really not a big enough purchase to worry about. Thought it would make a good thread and it did. She's knows I'm a big "flipper" or "picker" and never loose money. It's just went I buy something to store.... that she starts to scratch her head.

Anything beyond that is discretionary. We were in St Louis a couple weekends back and I bought beer that I couldn't buy at home. Two cases of bombers. She gave me a hard time about it until we stopped at an outlet mall in KC. She spent her money and shut up. I'm waiting for the right moment to raz her.

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??
Just trucks, nothing else really worth getting the couch over and she's come to expect it so it's not really hiding if she know's its coming right (even with a year or so in between?)
Now my Dad bought a Nova wagon last fall and we brought it home and stuck it behind the barn while Mom was out. The barn is about 300 yards from the house and she never goes there. We were celebrating our victory when we realized you could still see the front clip from the house...she came home and we played it cool until we could go push it back a little further.

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??
My X spent whatever she wanted and scrutinized whatever I did. By the end of our marriage she about destroyed our finances. That said,I got to where whatever I got was my business. Only large things she would obviously notice were even a consideration for hiding/scheming/whatever. You know, like a set of big wheels/Tires/lift kit. She never went into the shop. Twice,I stored a big stack of mounted tires (12.50/35-16),four spring packs, etc for months until I had the opportunity to install. Being a father, husband, taking care of two old houses(with my money),and running the business took most of my time. At some point I'd tell her I got a great deal on some used tires before going ahead with the project. The wheels and lift kit never registered, just the bigger tires under the truck. She never noticed a thing I did to my Harleys, except the paint, which my buddy did for crazy cheap or traded for work on his house. She also had no idea how much I spent on parts or an idea of how many parts (or toys) I actually had. I'd always come home from swap meets and just stick it all way all tidy like. I never liked living that way,but it's the bed she made. We never merged our accounts and we ran the family on some sort of balancing act of her taking care of most of the food, kid's clothes, and presents while I took care of the house, vehicle, and part of the other things I listed she did. I'd pay for summer camp and any sports equipment to encourage my kids. Things like bikes,skateboards,kayaks,surfboards,camping/hiking gear,ski/snowboard,etc. I felt dishonest, yet justified. Things were well taken care of and I was just avoiding my X's controlling personality. It was that or fight. Since she has gone and money has been tight for my son and I. I've been selling much of what I had bought to help support us. She has nothing to show and is declaring bankruptcy (and is an RN making $75,000 a year)
Now with Brenda-K,I tell her everything. She's a rational, sweet, and fair person who doesn't try to control. We have a relationship based on mutual respect and trust. It doesn't get any better than that!

I bought a dirt track car, then took my (now) wife to dinner to tell her what I bought. She wasn't too happy.

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??
When I was married, the biggest thing I hid was actually two things.
Rick never noticed my Plymouth missing for a week. The horse I swapped it for was hidden at the neighbors for a week. One day Rick went to the store and I felt it was time to sneak my treasure home. He pulled into the drive just as I did. I could have made a safe escape but for the horse hanging her head out of the passenger window. (walk through cube van). Needless to say, there was some explaining to do... |

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??
Engagement ring, but that was free, I milled it out of an old spark plug socket, so I guess a pillow pet I got her for Christmas one year. It was the only thing she asked for, so I told her I forgot, haha. I pretty much just ask and recieve, idk, I guess I'm just lucky. Just talk their ears off like they do ours, and when it comes to having to explain something like a motor, or a car, or a boat...you won't have near as much explaining to do. Or at least that's what seems to work for me, lol.
