Re: Speed Shops.... I Miss Them

We still have one here in the Manassas area. C & C Performance has been around forever, it's run by a Carrol Carter. He's one of the local drag racers here. His shop pumps out some nice engines and if you need that hypo part in a hurry, more than likely they have it in the store.

Re: Speed Shops.... I Miss Them

There used to be an Honest Charlie's 15 miles from here in Lagrange, GA, a Super Shop 35 miles away in Columbus, GA, and a SECO 85 miles from here in Montgomery, AL, but they all closed. Fortunately, Summit has a retail in McDonough, GA 90 miles from here and Barnett is in Atlanta a little over 100 miles from here, so I can still go get big without paying shipping. Being that Summit is a storfront for the warehouse, they usually have everything in stock. I have bought a lot of sheetmetal and tires and saved shipping costs.

I just had a conversation a few days ago about the same thing... "SUPER SHOPS" used to be the place to go... in high school thats where we went to get my CHRISTMAS gifts We are still fortunate enough to have Harahan Auto open... he fills NOS, sells race fuel, has EVERYTHING you can possibly need... in house machine shop etc.... a little pricey on some stuff but you cant beat convience

A tired warrior of the 1980s in a world of low profile tires, front wheel drive, and plastic bumpers, where people stay in their houses until snowplows move the offending substance from their paths, too helpless to travel without AAA and chains and salt, clearing their windows with longhandled brushes while gently stepping around in the snow trying to stay nice and dry.

Re: Speed Shops.... I Miss Them

All of my favorite shops are gone.

Super Shops - They were good to buy cams, pistons, rings, and gaskets.
They are gone from having big chain stores, and now I think they are a little hole in the wall place somewhere - I think...

Old Don Blair, his shop did all of my machine work.
I thought it was great, that I was doing business with the same guy that use to tune my Dad's 61 409 Impala back when My Dad was raising heck on the streets of Pasadena in the early 1960's

When he told me he was retiring, and selling the shop I had him build my 327 for the Suburban. Just to continue the memories.

Locally the only place that calls itself a speed shop, mainly sells chrome trinkets to bolt onto your engine.

Re: Speed Shops.... I Miss Them

The local Speed Shop went out of business years ago here. We still have J and M Speed Center, but the manager Steve is an a-hole to say the least. I used to buy stuff there, but now I buy other places. Shame, I would like to buy from a local business, but not with their sales practices and lack of knowledge...I hope they go under. Jegs and Summit have way better service and policies.

Re: Speed Shops.... I Miss Them

we have one napa here that stocks parts.. it used to be a dedicated speed shop.
but between track owner greed, and local politics (we dont need racing in our town... whatever) it's all but killed drag racing legally.
most guys now order on the net.. build cars witout any advice from the oldger generation and race the highway.. im not apart of that crap..
