Re: A Grille Like No Other

I've never been a fan of the 4 headlight Chevy grille, but the revised version looks fantastic. It looks stock, but much better - almost like what you would expect on the clay model styling study before the final "compromise" on a production design.

Very nice work Frizzle. I wouldn't mind seeing the process pics, should you decide to share them.

I have to agree that a GMC hood would be the icing on the cake so to speak.

Will look even better with the black painted so the Chevrolet floats in the middle!
Thanks man. I think the inverted opening gives it a little '57 flavor.

Hmmmm... I like the way you think. Would be interesting to see.

What did you do to yours?

Definately painting between the letters satin black, not sure about the rest. I'm kinda diggin the grey/white combo. Might go all white at some point.

Gotta give credit to old_skool_chevy and Irish66 for the satin paint idea and execution. They've been rollin the matte finish and without them mine would not be. Needs another coat one of these days, but it's clean enough for now.

Re: A Grille Like No Other

Well, the pics are stuck on an external hard-drive that doesn't want to play so I did this up in MSPaint for a quick/dirty idea of the basic steps:
  1. Find yourself a 1961 Chevy grill (60 will work to, but has stamped letters in the outer and no aluminum letters in the middle)
  2. (with bezels/lights removed) cut ends off square as indicated
  3. Flippy
  4. This is the tricky part. The inner halfs of the high beam provisions must be swapped side-to-side. Otherwise the bezel shape does not work (upper corners are more square and lowers ore more rounded)
  5. Right<->left
  6. Getting them to work on the opposite sides required some hammer/dolly and shrinker/stretcher work
  7. Weld ends back on (I actually did this before step 4)
  8. Since the grille was designed to be viewed from one angle (what was the top), when flipped there are some areas that must be filled in with metal
  9. C-H-E-V-R-O-L-E-T relieved of the hoop and mounted to a 1/2" dia. tube. Tube is mounted to tabs via hose clamps to retain adjust-ability
