auto vs stick, what do you prefer

I grew up with a stickshift, & still love em! The 6spd is fun to play with, but in town traffic, I tend to run 1st,3rd,& 5th....the 383 has enough tork that it doesnt need all the gears to roll with traffic. When you let em all fly for a 6000 rpm shift it sure is fun. crazyL

I'll take either. But,I guess you could say I lean towards manual. I started driving in a VW Bug,then a Bus. The old trucks that followed were manuals. Even my first '72 was a Highlander 402/3spd. I converted my first Blazer from 3spd to TH350 because I thought it would be cool to have an auto in a big tough 4wd and think that was the worst application of a 3spd possible. I had a '63 Riviera which only came with Powerglide. I never even knew when it shifted. It was like driving a golf cart with a 425 and dual quad. Pretty cool...just "on". I've always ridden motorcycles and they are all manuals. Working the clutch is no biggy to me.
My wife drove:'79 Fairmont 3 +O/D,'82 Rabbit 4spd,'87 Samurai 5spd,'90 Blazer 4spd,'95 Cavalier 5spd,'99 ZR2 5spd,and never complained about the clutch.
My oldest son drove:'65 Biscayne Wagon 3spd,'92 GMC 5spd,and now has an '86 CUCV TH400 and the '99 ZR2 5spd.
My daughter drove:'82 Prelude 5spd,'98 Cabrio 5spd,and now an '01 Cherokee.
My youngest son drove a '98 Nissan PU 5spd and now drives a '98 Ranger 5spd.
I drive a '92 GMC K3500 I ordered with a 5spd. My '72 K2500 is a TH350 that I have a 4spd set-up I want to put in because I like the good ole truck and ain't in no hurry feel. I may never get around to it,though. My '67 SWB project gets the M22 4spd because it is how I want it to drive. My '85 Jimmy is a 700r4 and I'll leave that alone because it works right and I just want to drive that.
I guess I'm a stick shift kinda guy with a stick shift family. But,automatics are ok,too. I do like the control a manual gives. And,they make you think about what you're doing. I believe the roads would be a better place to drive if everyone drove a stick. You have to change gears to go faster and shift down to go slower. Not just "GO" until you can't go anymore and stop. They drive too fast and don't even know it. Parking lots are the worst. No one drives a manual through a parking lot or a 25 mph zone in top gear.

I have a 3-on-the-tree & a 4-on-the-floor. They came that way & it's OK by me, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one with an auto in it. It was kind of tricky while I was recovering from right elbow surgery, because they are my daily drivers.

With any kind of real horsepower, a properly set up stalled auto will wear out a stick on the street with street tires any day of the week. I have owned many high horsepower (600-700 rwhp) stick cars, and on the street they are useless

Over here we generally drive manuals, I'd driven autos but never owned one before I bought my truck but I do like it with its auto box, kind of suits it somehow as we all know that you guys are too lazy to stir your own gears!

My 01 Blazer is a manual though which I don't think you even got as an option over there.

When I was younger, I thought it had to have a stick to be a man's truck. I really like the auto in my Blazer. If I'm in a situation where I need to shift manually, I can use the selector lever to do that, but most of the time I just drive.

My 70 is a auto and the 68 will be a t56, since my daily driver is a stick I've become use to having control of what gear I'm in. Love being able to grab a lower gear and get the RPM's up!! I also love being able to drink my coffee and have a smoke without it killing anyone. So, auto and stick they both have their benefits. You need two trucks....easy fix

I learned on sticks and couldn't wait to drive an automatic. Now I've come full circle, its manual all the way for me and these old trucks. Can be a form of theft deterrent too. More and more people don't know what the third peddle is for these days. Along with the hand crank on the door.

My last truck I drove for 22 years was a stick. My 67 C-20 has 350 with a turbo 400 and I do not miss shifting at all.

only reason i have an auto in my truck is because i use it to tow my boat. its nice to be able to let someone else park the trailer.

X'2 on have someone to park the trailer after unloading the boat.

The other day I turned into a wide open parking lot in my G8, and wanted to play a little, so I gave it some gas, finally it down shifted two gears, but by that time I didn't have the room to do anything. If I would have been in a manual car, I would have started in second and had a lot more fun. Miss my C5 FRC corvette in situations like that.

I love both honestly.. I had an 02 mustang GT with the 5 speed and a Vortech on it. I loved that car, but the heavy clutch in it was rough in traffic and try eating a cheeseburger while steering and shifting. Then I got my 05 dodge cummins and put a built auto in it. Man... Boosted 4wd launches are fun! But not as much fun as sticking in the clutch, up to 4 grand and dumping it.

A little programming can fix that problem in the G8

Trucks gotta be a stick for towing reasons. I like to be able to pick my gear and shift points when Im towing and hauling. My 88 Formula is a 6 speed but its just my street beater and cruiser. My Trans Am is track car though. Auto all the way. Its fully built with a 4400 stall though......so I dont know if that counts. Lol!

i agree. towing i like stick when pulling a load and traveling hills while towing.... i have had some very fast sticks and they are fun but like said, auto is so much easier
