Ok, maybe someone knows this. What would be involved if I buy the van and use the 350 and 700r4? Would it pretty much just bolt in? There wouldnt be a bunch of wiring or anything like that would there? Could I use the trans crossmember out of the said van in my '64? If it runs good it'd be worth 1000 bucks for the engine, trans and crossmember wouldnt it? Then I could look and see if I could swap everything in the front to my original cross member. Just looking to make a more hiway friendly daily driver vs my 230 straight six with 3 on the tree and manual brakes and steering. I am VERY uneducated at this stuff. Any thoughts??

Go looking for a 89 to 91 burb, they are not as abused, they have all the correct components look for one that has been wrecked or is rusted out badly, that way they are cheaper.......they will have you only want a 1/2 ton so you can get the 5 x 5 lug pattern, disc brakes, engine, transmission, power steering, and all the bracketry.

Just back off, take your time and something will come up.........Kieth

I am in the process of getting my brake system ready for the road, had some problems so we went down to Autozone, found out that rebuilt is inexpensive.

Rebuilt brake Calipers with new bolts, washers etc. $32.00 exchange $16.00 ea

New disc brake rotor assembly less bearings, $30.00 each new 5x 5 lug

found 2 1/2" Mcnoughty drop spindles per set $235.00 www.mcgauhtystore.com

I bought a '71 GMC w/no engine/trans-I used the spindles etc, trashed the rotors for new, used the calipers for cores on rebuilts, replaced bearings/brakes etc on the rear end. Bought a CPP prop valve, ran lines made from stock lengths of brake tubing. Use dbooster/MC from 1980 C10. Spent maybe $400.

I would like to be able to do something like that, but I don't have any experience with what will work where and how to hook everything up. Thats why I was leaning towards buying a complete running and driving donor vehicle. That way I could see how it should go together and just swap it to my truck. I am a paint and body guy, not really mechanical....yet. I want to learn tho! Any where I could find a complete parts list of what is needed so I can kinda wrap my head around what I will need?

Just bought a 1984 Suburban! 350 that was rebuilt a few years ago(by a local reputable shop ive used also) and a th350 tranny that was rebuilt and installed same time as motor. Has a set of nice rally wheels with good tires on it. It also has AC that works but needs charged. Most the AC parts arent but a few years old either. As with the radiator. The thing runs and drives great! I picked it up for $800. I feel like I did decent.

Hey Captainfab, what adapter and brackets will I need to purchase from you to get this thing done smoothly?

ok, just did some looking, looks like your power brake booster bracket, and the power steering pump bracket is what Ill need. Could you PM a price for those shipped? Or do you have a website I buy from?

Why couldn't a guy have the rear axles and drums filled and drilled for the 5x5 wheel pattern on the 60-66 rear axle to make 5 lug?
I would like to save my 61 rear axle as it has 3.73 gears.

Anyone have luck with this?

Yes the axles can be filled and redrilled and new drums installed. But I would only put the money into the axles if the wheel/axle bearing surfaces are in excellent condition.

The original differential under a '61 Chevy would have typically been a Eaton HO32. The only gears available in that differential are 3.38's and 3.90's. Now if your '61 is a GMC, then the differential is likely a Dana 44, and it could have 3.73 gears. Finding new brake drums for those is a real challenge. There is a whole thread about that.

It must be a dana the part number on the ring gear is 3817778 41 ring 11 pinion. 3. 73
