Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
Heck, I'm probably wrong that Keith's is a shade brighter than mine.
But, look at the backside of my cab. For whatever reason, there's a rectange in the middle, below the window that is a BRIGHTER shade than the rest. WHY is that there?! I'm thinking that bright spot is "copper poly" and the reset is a different/darker shade (obviously is, but from what to what is the question).

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
I think it is just one of those colors that is hard to photograph. In most of his own and the sellers photos the truck looks a different color almost every time. Mine is so dirty on the outside that I can only go by the interior paint.
That spot under your back window is weird, for sure.

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
I "think" that maybe (I had read somewhere) interiors were painted a shade different than the exteriors.
It's possible that spot on the back, and interior, is actually "copper poly" but the rest of the exterior is a darker shade.

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
The exterior always will fade before the interior and that is why you get that. Another thing is when it was painted at the plant and which plant. That color is going to be different due to a few factors more than other colors. That spot on your cab is probably just from when it was repainted. Who knows why they didn't repaint that section.

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
I don't think my truck was re-painted, Ryan - so out goes that theory. Just pin striping added and passenger door repainted. I could be wrong.
Look at the color difference. Fading can't be a factor because that part of the cab is covered up by the back of the bed. Sorry Webfoot, didn't mean to hijack your thread, an admin can delete theses posts for you. I've created a seperate thread asking the question here.

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
No biggie, man. It's all for the sake of discussion!
I replaced all four wheel bearings saturday. Holy s*%t those things are expensive. $55 x 3 plus $60 one from napa since O'reilly's only had 1 inner at their warehouse. $11 x 2 seals and 1 $10 spindle nut tool. Glad I will not have to do this again! As my buddy said "I guess bulletproof has its price". The old bearings were significantly worn. The ends of the rollers were tapered at both ends and looked like beads. The outers could rotate sideways in the race. I was also disappointed to see one of my expensive SKF bearings say "China" on it.

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
Steelies are looking good! Since I STILL have no air compressor I decided to try duplicolor's rattle can wheel paint. Must be somewhat decent if it takes 7 days to cure. Did as directed and started with 2 light coats and did a heavy coat, or 2. It was warm(er) today but of course the wind started to kick up so I wasted a half a can in the wind. I was impressed at how this stuff levels out. (shhh... don't tell anyone but these are F*rd wheels!)
Got my new console, and swapped the glovebox lid for one with original paint. This interior is starting to look pretty sweet. Now if that original style steering wheel I bought would ever show up...

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
Not really, other than I ordered a set of 235/85/16s for my steelies, and have yet to hear from the tire place. It is snowmobile season now so its going to get used!!
Also got the new repro wheel installed, it looks a lot better. I'd rather have an original wheel however, new repros are all plastic.

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
New tires, wheels & hubcaps installed - not going to do much to it during the winter, next is the rocker panel. Wonder what a wash would do for it!

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
litew8, as far as I know this is the stock height for a 4x4, I don't think it was lifted by the PO.
windmill, I got the console from amazon.com, I just did a search for "bench seat console". It is made in the USA.

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
Your truck is coming along real nice webfoot. Enjoy seeing the transformation. Nice job.
They are great trucks. I have a 72 K20 that hopefully will be on the road in the spring. Does yours happen to have an Eaton HO52 rear axle? I am having a tough time finding replacement emergency brake cables for the Eaton. Any suggestions?

Yep I have the HO52 and no idea on the e-brake cables, probably have to choke down a set of NOS ones. Mine are shot too!

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
Llewellyn is getting a frame mounted hitch this weekend! I never liked how the bumper mounted ball felt towing. My post above is kind of ironic since here it is January 6 and there still isn't any snow. (boooo)
I found a Curt class III on ebay for $125 shipped, brand new. (this one) http://www.curtmfg.com/index.cfm?eve...ductCode=13028 I have bought some of the upper and lower trim, put some of the deluxe trim back on (pedals, mirror etc) and still hoping to paint it this spring sometime. I am still not sure if I want to do the white/bronze/white/bronze or just keep it as stock and go white cab/bronze.

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
Cool deal on the hitch. It is odd there seems to be no snow anywhere besides Wyoming. That's what my buddy says that always goes snow mobiling in Michigan. He said everyone he goes with went to Wyoming this year.

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
I actually ended up going riding on saturday. We have to go up to 6000' to find any decent snow but it was great. Spent most of the day between 6000 and 7000'. Doing much of anything is labor intensive up that high.

Re: 71 K-20 tow/haul truck
Last time I was up in the mountains a weird thing happened. My front wheels all of a sudden swung hard to the left. Luckily it was a bank and not an embankment. Come to find out a nut on the front left U-bolt had backed way off and when making low speed turns the drag link would just push the axle along the leaf springs rather than the wheels. Luckily my buddy some tools and we got it fixed, on our backs in the snow. I took this as a sign that the front end needs gone through so I have new Moog tie rod ends, new delco drag link ends and a USA rebuilt steering box on order. The steering box is just a big wad of grease so I am thinking it used to leak but has sealed itself shut under layers of caked on gunk.
I also rebuilt a q-jet with new primary rods and jets. It was my first rebuilt and I am happy to say it runs awesome. The original one will get some attention now. I have been acquiring upper and lower trim for this now too and finally got the wife on board for painting it. Wont happen until at least late spring when i can DD the chevelle again. Going to go original without the white stripe after seeing this truck on ebay.
