Re: geezers unite
I'm 71. Was forced into retirement by light stroke, leaving vision and balance trouble. Graduate of the "School of hard knocks". Spent most of my life on a farm, but slipped in several different jobs now and then. Always loved to mess with cars, trucks, or anything old.
Learned my first hard lesson in 1958. Bought a '51 Ford car/w a souped up Olds motor, tranny, and rearend. Lesson #1. Never expect your "hotrod" to serve as your DD. I was never so broke, or walked as much as I did while owning that car. Ever since then, I've always left my DD driver stock, and well maintained. My toy was parked 'til play time. I've had the fun of fixing up several things and like to wander off the beaten path to different stuff now. I hope to always try to encourage other people on their projects, do my best never to seem like an old codger "know it all" on the forums as I still learn alot from you younger "kids". Plan to keep on tinkering, and try to live life to the fullest 'til they play taps. Time passes fast, so let's make the most of it. Cayoterun

Re: geezers unite
Turned 53 3 weeks ago.I agree with the folks above. The hardest thing about aging for me is that I'm still a young buck in my mind.Except for it saying "You can't do that and my pride saying,oh yes you can".I've played with old cars/truck and other junk all my life.I've also always worked on old junky to new tech machinery for industrial plants.I too love the early hours of the morning when it's still and quiet ,no ones around and I can just do my own thing without interuptions.I need a bigger shop, more tools and more time to play with my projects.I don't think I've ever had enough of any of those.
Life's good,I can hardly wait to see what tommorow brings.

Re: geezers unite
I'll turn 53 next time October rolls around.
Like Satchel said, "Growing older is just mind over matter; if you don't mind, it don't matter." Oh BTW, our first Grandkid turned 3 weeks old today!

Re: geezers unite
68 here, and with God's blessing still doing pretty well. Beat a spell of cancer a couple of years ago, and still cancer free. I'm not as agile as I once was, and it takes me longer to do things. My wife calls this slow.....I call it deliberate.
I get up around 6:15 every morning, and the dog and I take a mile walk before everyone else is out and about. My problem (or gift perhaps,) is having too many interests. My truck, boats, models, shop projects, yard projects, and reading. I have noticed the dirth of 30-50 year old participants in the hobby. Reflecting back on my own life, early on BK (before kids,) I had a little $ in my pockets, but while my wife and I were raising a family, and building a career, there wasn't time or money for involvement in much outside of daily living. Now that the kids are gone and on their own, it seems there's a little change in my pockets, and certainly more time to pursue the hobbies. Life sorta reminds me of a dyno-run.....you sit there idling until you find out what you want to do. When you find out what that is, you give it all you've got until you reach your max, you struggle with that for a period of time, then the pressure is lifted and if life hasn't beat you down, you can idle along greatful that you made it.

Re: geezers unite
yEA YOU HAVE TO GO BACK WHERE YOU STARTED FROM TO REMEMBER SO YOU CAN GO BACK AND GET WHAT YOU ORIGINALLY WENT FOR. Still can’t type with out looking at the letters. One good thing about getting old in the wife finally gets tired complaining about the things that has pissed her off for the last 20 years now she just looks the other way and mumbles under her breath and you can also ignore her when she talkes to you and say Sorry Hon I didn't hear you.

Re: geezers unite
What really annoys me is when I'm walking around the shop looking for the tool I just laid down somewhere, and the wife comes in...."...what are you looking for?" I discribe it to her and she practically walks right to it! That bugs me. On the other hand, when I've lost most of my marbles she may come in handy.........
She used to help me out with the truck, pretty soon she'll be helping me into the truck.

Re: geezers unite
if any elderly gentlemen with trucks, such as myself, have owned one particular truck for a number of years, please post up some photos.
this thread needs pictures to help the younger reading impaired people stay with us. if you have photos of you with your truck, even better. tomorrow i will post a 48 5 window that i finished in 1979. that's 32 years ago... that's also 4 sets of free monroe shocks. so, come-on geezers, let post some pics |

Re: geezers unite
I'm at 54 now. I have a pretty rough shoulder (3 surgeries) but you just learn to work through it. Like everybody says, you still think you're a kid, but you're body tells you otherwise. I still love to jump in the truck and just drive for hours. That will never change.

Re: geezers unite
I rode my 1983 Honda GL650 SilverWing into town today, about 9 miles there, and 9 miles back, parked it at my sister's place, and got on my bicycle, with trailer, and rode my rear all over town doping errands, about 10 miles. It is now 102 degrees. It has been just one of those very nice days for a bicycle ride. My bicycle trailer is one of those that was originally set up to haul a kid or two, with a mesh seat/canopy. I removed all the mesh, it was virtually rotted away, and made a wood body for it, and now, I can put a lot of stuff into it. Makes for a nice, no gas used parts runner/grocery getter. One day in the not so far away future, I will ride from the house, into town and back, that will be a nice challenge for this 62 year old fart.
