Re: This Is Why You Check The Tank Out
Here's what the gas looked like from my wrecker when I got it. It was "oompa loompa" orange! Smelled real bad too!
Truck was off the road for 25 years so it's probably about that old. NO ethanol in this stuff!

"Matt, why don't you drain the gas tank on that thing?" "HUH"? I didn't know that older cars like that had drain plugs on the tank. So I get the behemoth on a hoist and wheel over the oil drain catch pan and proceeded to open that drain plug. Now I've dealt with some pretty nasty stuff in my time. I've worked in a butcher shop, gut deer every fall, handle maggot infested fish that wash up on shore, stuff that would make alot of people gag - and never have been bothered by it. ONE DROP of that old gas splashed up and landed on my lip - I thought I was going to have to miss the rest of my shift. That stuff is NASTY!

Re: This Is Why You Check The Tank Out

I cut a hole in the end of the tank this morning with the torch (Disclamer: don't try this unless you REALLY, REALLY know what you are doing!!) and dumped the "stuff" out of it. The large chunks are a tar like substance and about 1" to 1 1/2" thick Some of the tarry stuff was stuck and I couldn't get it to come out. LockDoc

Re: This Is Why You Check The Tank Out
I wonder if it was vandalized with sugar in the tank or something.

Re: This Is Why You Check The Tank Out
That is just incredible. I can't believe all of that trash is in a fuel tank. I agree, maybe some little hands had decided to "hide" some stuff in there. Maybe that is why the PO quit using the truck.
Thanks for sharing with us. Keith |

Re: This Is Why You Check The Tank Out
That's about how the tank looked on my 72, it had sat for 10 years with about half a tank of gas, it had pinholes rusted along the line where the gas came too. I think I posted some pics when I pulled the sending unit out, looked a whole lot like yours. I lucked into a good tank from a 68 ton that had been on the road till about a year ago, tank is nice and clean!
