I think the battery was under the seat in the 1953 GMC pickup that my dad had when I was a kid. Don't think that would be a great place for one but also think it could be done if you really wanted to. Some sort of box with a seal and vents should be possible. Motorcycles have the battery tucked up under the seat with a vent hose down under to drain any fumes or excess fluid.

On the frame under the truck would be out of the way but I hope you never need a jumpstart.

That's another issue, the jumpstart. If your going to the trouble to relocate your battery, why not run terminal leads up under the hood for easy access?

Long Knight, yeah it's real. The battery is in the back by the fuel cell and the remote terminals are in the back near the tag. Ive had it that way for 9 years without any problems. Here's another picture.

That's a great idea! Just thinking of how much of a pain it is sometimes to pull nose to nose with someone for a jump. Now I have another good idea to add to my list. I still want to know if you have any scares hooking up that hot?

It is close, so you do have to be careful. All I ever hook to it is a battery charger, so it's not a big deal to me.

I used a plug from a battery powered fork lift.made up a pair of jumper cables with one end for the plug and clamps on the other.

Precision Power (the car audio company) used to have a great high current connector on their big amps. It was made by Amp and did a quick clip mating. A friend used these clips to do a battery take-off... he mounted it in his grille. Then he lopped off one end of his jumper cables and put the mating plug on it. Voila... jumpstarts without raising the hood.

That's a pretty neat set up...but it seems a little strange to relocate your battery out of your engine compartment just so you can drill some big holes in your floor for some all-thread. But who am I to be a critic, I like my battery under the hood near all the things that use it. LOL!

Mine is very close to 1971Stepside's but I hinged the bottom and use bolts on the side straps to hold it up. Still a pain to get it in and out. I use a boat battery box to keep the crap off of it. Its ugly but if someone wants a pic I could put one up.
As far as jump starts Im running a ford style relay on the firewall thats easy to get to. The only thing this battery does is start the truck. The battery in the stock location does every thing else.
I had thought about putting it under the pax floorboard and making an access panel under the mat.

I like the setup that 383 Stroker is running.

I am going to design a stainless steel battery box and make it myself. Similair to the one Big Block 73 is going to use. I think the grade of stainless I should ude is somthinfg like 308 ? sound right ?

is that on the side of the frame? Im having a hard time figuring where everything is in relation to the rear of the truck(I know where the jumper poles are..lol)

Yeah, it's on the frame. You can see the rearend cover in the picture, maybe that will help you figure out where it's at.

Most NHRA sanctioned tracks require that the on/off switch on battery relocated vehilces be visible...like on the back bumper etc in case of fire or accident...yours seems to be a bit hidden.

Have you had any experiences at the track yet...have they said anything?

bigblock73, they haven't said anything about it so far. But it might be the tech guy at this track. The track I go to is a NHRA track, but it's 1/8 mile.
