Re: 71 C-30 Chevy Wrecker 440 Holmes

Sweet, thank you for the pics, Bobs409 is yours under the rear of the wrecker body? Looks like its aways in there.

I wanted to match up the SPID see how close it was to my 69. They are pretty close.

My 67 c20, I love this thing.

Yes,
Looks like the same genetics. Does anybody have rear shocks on their wrecker? I do not have any top mounts. Need some shocks, bounces to much.

Geez, I didn't look, I'll have to check mine to see if it has mounts or not.

Yeh, the hitch is below the wrecker body. Looks a little low to me but haven't tried using it yet either. You can see it in the photo below.

Mine has rear shocks. These mounts attach to the frame with rivets but changed to grade 8 bolts now. See lower pic.

Re: 71 C-30 Chevy Wrecker 440 Holmes

Shocks were an option on C/30 cab & chassis DRW. Mine has them. My hitch is mounted to the frame and is a 2" receiver type. I see no reason a hitch couldn't be mounted directly to the tow body like Tim's. That tail piece is HD and strong enough for the sling to mount to.

It's great to see your truck has been in use already. I have yet to tow anything on the sling. It was dismantled when I got it and I need a few pieces yet. What gears do you figure the truck has? Mine has 5.13s and she's a slow go alright. I'd like to run 4.10s to gitter down the road a little better. I don't see why that wouldn't pull well enough. I also keep toying with going to a bigger motor. The guy I got the truck from has a Cadillac 500 set-up for a Chevy Truck that was in a '50 car hauler

This reminds me of something. When I dismantled my wrecker, I found only a few small bolts actually holding the box on! There are 2 big plates that sit under the boom and bolt to the frame. Nice big bolts going from the boom to those plates but I found small inadequate bolts from the plates to the frame. Scary stuff!

The old wrecker guys might want to check all your bolts to see what's there. (or not there!) Make sure they aren't rusted away or missing all together.

Optional shocks... That's a new one to me. Mine appear to have been factory. Can't imagine what it would ride like without them.

I noticed mine doesn't have a front sway bar. Was that optional too?

Re: 71 C-30 Chevy Wrecker 440 Holmes

Hi fellas, new guy to the board here and a new guy to old chevy trucks. I'm really an old F**d man in rehab

Anyway, I recently picked this lil beauty up and I'm currently trying to find new brake rotors for the darn thing. Does anyone have a clue as to optiuons out there? The rotor that my local NAPA guys gave me had the incorrect back spacing on the inner wheel bearing.

Re: 71 C-30 Chevy Wrecker 440 Holmes

Thanks for the responses. I have a 72 3500 GMC longhorn parts truck, a good source for the mounts. Hauling back the 63, the truck got really bouncy going over bridges. Shocks will be tops on the list. I thought it might have 4.56, it runs out at 55.

I've never heard of them. Got a picture? I wonder if they are the same A&W that has a catalog selling towing and recovery equipment. If so,they don't sell wrecker units, just accessories now. Wait, that's AW not A & W.

Re: 71 C-30 Chevy Wrecker 440 Holmes

My 69 C30 doesn't have rear shocks and it's not as bad as you'd think. You can notice it a bit every so often but the springs are so stiff that it isn't a big deal.
I run it empty to get water or gravel and on the way back loaded have had the truck as much as 4K over GVW. Not intentionally though. Other than the drum brakes are not enough for that weight the suspension handles from no load to overload like a dream. I'd like to add them but mine has a 14 bolt in the back and the brackets for the diff housing end up in an awkward spot on the cast center section. Literally where the diff bearing is. Don't want to weld it without pulling the carrier and bearings.

Re: 71 C-30 Chevy Wrecker 440 Holmes

Those C-30 wreckers are beautiful. Quickly becoming a museum piece.
It's true. The C30's didn't come with rear shocks but I think there were mounts on the axle and some dealers may have installed them. My 70-C30 didn't have shocks and with no weight on the rear, would bounce like a springboard. My top speed was also around 45 mph with 4.56 gears and nearly floored throttle. I have since switched to 3.73 14 bolt and NV4500 trans. Now can run 65 mph @ about 1900 rpm. (and need a torker motor)

Hello,
Does the insurance companies or DMV give you any BS about it being a wrecker? I once went and priced insurance with another company, just shopping around, and I got a bunch of BS about my 83 C-30 with bolt-on tool boxes down both sides of the flat bed. They kept telling me that it was a "commercial" truck. Even tried telling them it was just a plain old truck, it didn't do any commerce work. I found insurance elsewhere.

Neat! I'd love to have something like this, or a ramp bed, for my shop.

Here in Maryland, yes. They single out tow trucks specifically as not eligible for historic registration. Total BS. No vehicle registered historic is to be used for work or any commercial use. So let tow trucks register historic, same as any other vehicle, and enforce the commercial use violation if someone does that, same as any other vehicle.
