Re: My 84 gmc swb project

got word the other day my 383 short block is ready, just gotta go pay the balance and pick it up. can't wait to get it together. also fought with the upper control arm bushings for an hour and a half but got all 4 air hammered out. also did a little more touch up with the blaster in the pumpkin to get the grit out of all the nooks and crannies.

Cool Re: My 84 gmc swb project

Uhh, unless your new control arm bushings came with new outer sleeves (the poly ones don't AFAIK) you just shot yourself in the foot. Even the OEM MOOG bushings don't have the outer sleeves.

AutoZone has a bushing tool kit that presses out the old bushings and leaves the outer sleeves intact. It also presses in the new ones opposite of removal, and you'd have been done in less than half the time it took to hack them out with your air chisel...

Re: My 84 gmc swb project

ok. sorry for delay. been busy with work and house renovations. found out my donor block wasn't able to be punched out so i had to buy another block.. picked up the (new to me) 383 short block. put the heads on. got chromo push rods. put the rockers on. found out all the intake valves had been ground down to far so the self aligning tabs were resting on the spring retainers. so back to the stock rockers for now... but did get my oil pan and center bolt adapters for perimeter bolt covers in. also ordered my dress up kit. will post those pics soon.

I love that engine test set-up you have going there!

That is something I could have really used a while back!

Motor looks amazing too btw.

Re: My 84 gmc swb project

thank ya. ya the motor stand was a rust bucket i got from a guy who frequents the parts store i work at part time. 30 minutes had it wire wheeled, primed, painted and new gauges in it. makes things a lot easier.

Re: My 84 gmc swb project

well.. good news and bad. came across this truck for a number i couldn't refuse. 86 lwb. all new interior. wats not been installed aka door panels, vent window seals, etc i have in boxes. all billet trim. all new carpet, headliner, bench seat foam and upholstery. 4 in rear drop, 2.5 drop spindles ( no motor in now - makes truck sit a lil higher) 4.30 gears, detroit locker, b&m aluminum trans oil pan (for my 700r4), lokar shifter, new in box 3k stall converter, and more --- all for $1k. now the bad news, the 383 i built had a leak and turned out to be a bad head.... gonna save up and order aluminum heads....

Re: My 84 gmc swb project

Ok. Heads came in. Aluminum 2.02 1.60's. 3/8 screw in stud. raised guide plates. cnc'd combustion chambers. War hammer 1.5 roller rockers. fired it up and it sounds like a BEAST. also got a holley fuel regulator and picked up a set of cherry bomb extremes for $40. blasted and painted them - they look brand new. going to make another video fri and will upload. also removed dual tanks on the 86 and installed the fuel cell. hope to put motor in truck fri as well. fingers crossed!
