Re: Straight out of pasture 68

Shes definitely gonna get cleaned up before winter. Its gonna need major brake work and a gas tank for sure before its road worthy. Ill have to start collecting parts over the winter. Plan to keep the patina look for a while. Need to find a set of steel wheels that I can still run caps on and get rid of those split rims too.

Im gonna keep her as stock as possible for time being which is odd for me. I cant leave anything alone I swear. I always wanted a big block! Ive got my LSX in my TA making over 500 so that will keep me happy.

You should get in touch with Randy (teeitup on the board). He is up in Meridan and parts quite a few of these trucks out and I'm sure he could hook you up with a good gas tank and probably wheels.

I have 2 or 3 gas tanks.....but they're in my "parts storage area" in WA

Re: Straight out of pasture 68

Mildew removal off painted metal (like house siding) from a guy who has done hundreds of mildewed houses of painted aluminum & steel siding: Cup of TSP (hardware store) or alternately, use TIDE powdered laundry detergent, cup of Clorox bleach, per gallon of water. Stir well & be sure the TIDE or TSP is dissolved.

Wet the surface with plain water spray, washing off all the loose stuff, then gently apply the detergent-bleach mix starting at the bottom & going up; let it soak a while, & rinse it off. Don't let it dry on there, just keep re-applying to keep it wet. Do it in a shaded spot is best.

Repeat a time or two as needed (yours is pretty badly caked-on), and it'll look like new metal with the old patina. No scrubbing to avoid irregular shine.

PS: what a GREAT find !!!!!!!!! I'm jealous.

Thanks for the tip. I was gonna make a post to get advice on getting that stuff off. I was gonna put the sprinkler on it for a few hours and then take pressure washer to it, but its pretty stuck on. Theres some surface rust spots on the bed sides. Will that mixture take off that stuff too and just leave that dark look?

Yeah, go for the LS engine, send me a message, I'll haul that 396 off for you, (I'll pay for it, though)...

Bruceman,
I've never heard of the 396 2Bbl in a pickup (not doubting you, just have not seen literature about it). Where is this information found??? I'm an expert on nothing. I've owned my 68 since 1980. Thanks for the info.

Meatman,
If your engine is in any kind of favorable condition, not need a complete re-build. The stock cams in those engines are very poor performers. replacing the cam would help a lot!!! Beware though, that's a high compression engine, stay away fron extreme energy type cams, w/ that engine...

Re: Straight out of pasture 68

68Gold/white, Not to worry about asking, I don't mind a bit. I just found this out recently. I too am a expert on nothing. I do enjoy learning. I am happy to explain.

This is a link to the main page of the GM Hertiage center. If you scroll down to Chevrolet Trucks (all models not listed below) and click on SHOW, you can get info on any year chevy truck.
http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-h...tion-kits.html

This link is for the 1968 truck PDF file with all the info on 68's
http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-h...olet-Truck.pdf

This is a pic from the 68 c10-30 sales brochure. They list 2 versions of the 396, you can also read a little about them on the lower right. There is no mention of 2bbl or 4bbl or the code for them here. Just two versions of the 396. (you can see this pic better if you enlarge it.)

This pic is from the GM Hertiage center online (Second Link above). Here you can see that the 396 was available with a 2bbl and you can see that it was a option on C10-30's Meatman has a C-20

This pic is also from the GM Hertiage center (second link above) and you get the breakdown on both the 2bbl and 4bbl 396's With the option codes. L66 for the 2bbl and L47 for the 4bbl. This is the C20 page which is what meatman has.

Now all we need to do is find a SPID with the L66 option on it. OH! wait a minute here's one...

So that shows that they actually did make it into our trucks.

Probably won't take any of the rust off at all. If anything, might darken it some.

Chlorox kills mildew & bleaches things by "oxidizing." Rust = iron oxide.

Re: Straight out of pasture 68

Spot on with the use of TSP .. must be a fellow deck and house washer! Just be careful with the pressure washer, not sure what you are using but be careful! Use a fan tip and easy with the pressure if you are able to adjust it and keep the tip 6-12 inches from the truck. It is real easy to want to get right up on it and blast it off but thats where most will do damage. On cars and truck like that soak it with a mixture, pressure wash the top layer off, then I like a good ole bucket of HOT soapy water and a big ole sponge. Have fun, and don't forget the rubber boots!

Very "Right-On."

One more tip: Wear goggles & don't let any of that TSP & Chlorox mix get on you & stay (or dry) on you ---on your skin. It does a pretty good job of removing "hide" too, as well as mildew. You REALLY don't want to get any in your eyes, either.

And yes, I was in the siding installation & deck-building business for years, and had a good re-contact business going doing pressure washing after I had done an install a few years before.

Thanks for all the info.
As soon as I learn how to upload a picture, I WILL be dangerous.
I'm going to check my glove box lid, see which 396, mine is. I always just assumed it was the 325 HP lowest HP car engine.
My 396 had the dome pistons (Q-Jet, stock to engine), would ping w/o octane booster. I tore it apart in 1986 () it was smooth wore out.
I have a big block 2 Bbl intake, I had given to me, almost never see ANY 396 w/ a 2 Bbl. I've been told the 2 Bbl was an Impala engine option, only, again I'm no expert...
Mine's a 68 gold/white C10, th400, p/s, p/b, a/c, it's not in great shape, right now, I'm still gathering parts...
My 68 might look like a pile, for the moment, it will come around. I'm working on a 67, to use when needed, so I can haul 68 parts around, to get it done....
