What worked good for me was spraying paint stripper and then using a die grinder with wire wheels and fiber disk. It works better and there's no loss of detail in the metal like that happends when using 60 grit sanding disk. Also the fiber disk work well on mild rust, a lot of the time you can remove surface rust down to clean metal.

Re: My 58 Apache stepside (pics soon)

Update
Engine has leaking head bolts and must be repaired. I talked to the guy who rebuilt the engine today and told him what has happened. He agreed to repair it. I've been really busy with work so I'm glad I didn't get a chance to get any further than installing the engine. The truck doesn't have any body parts other than the cab. When I get it back I'm going to start putting the doors, fenders, and hood on. The bed still needs to be painted before I put that part of the project together. Really want to finish this truck by spring. There's a car show that I want to attend with the freshly done 58 Apache

Wow, your truck looks NIICE!

What color white is that and can you tell us your level of experience? Painter, multiple car experience, or rookie? Cause your paint looks excellent! Congrats.

Re: My 58 Apache stepside (pics soon)

before you bolt on the doors and front end get everything working
i was able to finish 95% of the wiring and get everything under the hood done with just the core support and radiator installed
it's a lot easier to work on the motor, get the exhaust done and bolt on all the front accessories without the sheetmetal on the truck
as for the wiring; it's a lot easier with the doors off and the seat out, especially if your doing a stereo, ac, power anything or an alarm
you won't have to protect all the paint on these parts if you just leave them off

truk sat this way until everything was done

Pretty much rookie when it comes to restorations. I helped my dad paint a few cars when I was a kid but the products used today make the job a lot easier with better results. I'm a house painter by trade but this is a lot more work. The hardest thing was stripping the old paint and grime off. I'm really excited about finishing this truck, and I'm doing it where my late father used to do this kind of work. I'm sure if he were here he would love the new shop I built. We could have done some great things,he had such a passion for paint&body work. Thanks for the compliments and kind words.

Yes, that's what my truck looks like now. It is a lot easier getting in under the dash to do the wiring and such. I also installed new wiper motor and some of the vintage air components. I'm glad that I didn't get further into the build before discovering the leaking headbolts/gasket. I feel better that the truck will go back to the shop only with the cab and engine. Should be easier for him to get the heads sealed back up and returned to me to finish.

Are you being funny? Or do you really like the interior that I haven't installed yet. I think black and white is going to look great in this old truck. I really want that vintage look but done in a way that looks to be a deluxe type trim level if it were available back then. I know the cameo's had a deluxe trim with door panels to match the seats. I took it further with matching seats, door panels, and visors with chrome dash buttons and fresh air vents.got the chrome speaker that fits between the visors and Also have black armrest for the door panels. Thinking about doing the top part of them in the same white vinyl as the seat accents.

i think squirrely might be a little envious of the original condition of your truck floor (as am i)
i know i could have changed a clutch without getting under my truck

Re: My 58 Apache stepside (pics soon)

Update
I started putting it back together but had a setback with the engine,it was leaking coolant from the head bolts. I sent it back to the engine builder and he repaired it. Now it's leaking coolant around the intake and it smokes on the driver side exhaust. I'm really disappointed with this guy. I have used him before and thought the old '58 283 V8 would be a text book build. Aside from this I have had medical issues (pinched nerve/back problems) and it has kept me from hanging out at the shop as much as I would like. I will be getting on it next week to do a few things
