Re: 64 Build "The Titanic"

Pretty darn good feeling!

I started this build with absolutely NO experience. These forums and a little help here an there have helped so much. I am far from finished but i tell ya it sure feels good to turn that key.

My current dilemma is this,

The engine tops out a 1900 rpm, I've got the SM456 transmission and 3.73 gears. Will be hunting for a new rear end.

Re: 64 Build "The Titanic"

Nice work ziplock. Very cool build. You still have time to change direction and go with a big block!!

Re: 64 Build "The Titanic"

I thought so too. Unfortunately I spent my entire Sunday building the dual set up, only to scrap the whole thing because it looked so darn silly. Happy with the end result though.

Here is what I finished with.

Re: 64 Build "The Titanic"

Not much of an update. Haven't done much lately other then drive her around town.

I am going to look for a new rear axle today to increase my top speed. Only 55mph with my 3.73s. I am in what you would call a mock up stage right now. I am about to tear down completely and reassemble taking much better care.

Enjoy!

Re: 64 Build "The Titanic"

Thanks guys! I am really please with how its coming along.

MPG right now is quite poor with my current gear setup. I was able to pick up an old Cadillac rear end with a 2.92 gear ratio. An old neighbor of mine owns a Cadillac junk yard just outside of town and just gave it to me! Thought that was pretty sweet. I am hoping to have it swapped in by the weekend to see how it drives.

I also got in contact with Hercules today and they are actually still manufacturing parts for my engine. I didn't need much but have been battling front and rear main seals ever since it was delivered. So that was pretty cool.

Anyway, I will update this thread as I move along in my tear down and reassembly.

Re: 64 Build "The Titanic"

Update, New rear end worked great. Do not have a tach so I don't know my RPMs but I am now able to cruise at 65 with only about 1/2 throttle. Topped out a little above 80. I feel this is pretty good.

I decided to use these last few months of winter to redo a few things. I had developed a pretty bad oil leak that needed attention. To pull the pan I needed to pull the engine and to pull the engine I needed to pull the Cab. The engine is getting a fresh paint job, new front and rear mains, pan gasket kit, turbo rebuild, and new fuel fittings. Should be sealed up tight.

I was not happy with my motor mount design. The engine sat way to high up front. To bring the thing down I needed to section the Cross member to make room for the pan. I also counter sunk the mounts to bring the engine down a solid 3 inches. Very pleased with how it turned out. I am very confident is this setup.

Visual update. New turbo, exhaust, fuel lines, lowered another inch or so, cab reinstalled, and got the seat reupholstered. I am starting on wiring this afternoon. Hope to have it running within the next couple of weeks.

Here are the pictures.

Re: 64 Build "The Titanic"

looking good man, now just ship that truck to Ky, so I can enjoy driving it around, lol I can't wait to get mine together. I finally found a 4bt but had to spend my saved cash on bills. I hate that. I guess for now I will have to stick with the 292.

Re: 64 Build "The Titanic"

What material did you use for the seat? It kind of looks like leather or faux leather.

Yea the 4bts can be pretty pricy, I did not have have funds period to spend on one for my "toy" I was very thrilled to have stumbled upon mine.

I had the seat done at a local upholstery shop. They are friends of a friend so they hooked me up. They new what I was building and said they would handle it. I am not sure of the material but its a fake leather. I just picked the color from a book. Very pleased with how it turned out.

Re: 64 Build "The Titanic"

Hit the nail on the head this time. I like it!

Buttoned up the wiring last night and had to fire it up.

Just need to bleed the brakes and put my seat in and i will be able to take it for a test drive. looking forward to feeling the difference with the new turbo!
