Re: An Interesting Story About My '68 CST/Custom Camper

Thanks guys. The good and the bad. The good is that I still have the truck and I drive it in the summertime. I am in the process of putting a Dana 60 3.54 rear end in it at this time, so it is more road friendly and I can drive it more. I had the Buddy Buckets re-upholstered and blasted and painted the original wheels. I also took care of a few maintenance items including brakes and tune up. I plan on driving it a lot this Summer. The bad is that the previous owners wife passed away a few years ago, although I am still in touch with her daughter. I kind of put this one on the back burner because it was no fun to drive with the low geared rear end that was in it. I guess I shouldn't have done that. I kind of dropped the ball on it. Anyway it lives on and will be a useful truck for me now. Thanks, LockDoc

Re: An Interesting Story About My '68 CST/Custom Camper
I bought my present truck in 2014 from a young man in South Dakota and he told me he bought from someone in Minnesota and hadn't had it that long and told me he bought it to use a bit then flip. All good so when I get the truck home I go through the glove box and original owners manual in its sleeve is in there and the Protecto-Plate and a couple of invoices dated 1999 from a shop in Yakima Washington and one from a shop in Windom Minnesota that shows the A/CCompressor had been changed and the system converted to 134 A. The last name on the invoices was the same as the last name on the Protecto Plate so figured was passed from one family member to another. Did a little internet sleuthing one day and found a phone number in Yakima for the name on the invoices. Took a shot called one day and no answer but left a voice mail explaining I had the truck. A few hours later I get a call and yes was the right man. His Dad bought the truck new in July 1972, and hated the plaid seat so bought a good seat cover for it and I guess thats why was in such good shape when I got the truck, and he bought it from his Dad in 1987. He drove it over the years and it was in a garage when not in use. He said people wanted to buy it but a few had no money and a couple others told him they were going to repaint it and lower it etc and he didn't want that for the truck. He said he sold it to someone in Minnesota in 2011 and I guess thats who the guy I bought it from got it from. I sent some pics of the truck and he sent me some back like the one here of the truck on the trailer going to Minnesota and the one with the cap from when it was only a week or two old. A week later I got a calll back from Bob and he was thanking me for reaching out to him as he started calling sibings and they had had a great time reminiscing about the family truck. Moral of the story is like Leon did and I did if you have the info reach out and first you very well make someones day ,week or year and for you, get some history on your truck.

Re: An Interesting Story About My '68 CST/Custom Camper
Great stories! I was working on a '67 C10 when I saw a '67 C20 longbed in 503 green pop up on CL. That's when the plan changed from restoration to a semi-preservation. The man I got the C20 from said it was pulled from a barn with a family of racoons in the cab. Mr. Harre's name was still on the title and the bedsides. I'm officially the 2nd owner. I haven't reached out to the Harre family, but did send some pics to the gentleman I got it from after it was back on the road. I think he regrets letting it go.

"Recently lost a great friend of 40 yrs to a long fight with cancer. Over the years we went back and forth about who had the best truck, talk about trips taken, loads we hauled, etc. My buddy willed me his truck! It's had a couple of re-paints and two engines during it's life. Runs perfect! In his honor, I'm leaving it just the way it is. I did have his obituary laminated and put it in place of the build sheet behind the seat springs". We still swing by his sisters a couple of times a month to visit. She loves seeing the truck. She gets teary eyed when she hears it coming up the hill, as it reminds her of her brother. I was showing off the new seat one day, when she ran into the house and came out with a picture of his pet goat Daisy and his dog riding shotgun in the truck! She said don't let a goat on that new seat! Last edited by yuccales; 01-24-2021 at 07:06 PM. |
