Re: Anyone else regret getting rid of their first squarebody?

The first one I bought myself was a '75 Blazer. I grew up around the corner from the original owner. I bought it when I was a junior in high school, and had it all through college. It finally rusted out beyond repair. It also went through a series of engines; the original 400 used oil like crazy, so I swapped in a list of engines from cars I parted out; It had a 350, 327, 454, and 472 Cadillac, and finally the original 400 after a cheapie rebuild. It also ended up lifted 4" on 35's with an 8 bolt Dana 44 front and 14 bolt rear. In it's last 2 incarnations, it would go pretty much anywhere my buddies could on their 3 wheelers. I loved that truck.

I guess I come by it honestly. My dad had a '73 right after I was born, and my Grandpa had a '76 that he bought new.

Re: Anyone else regret getting rid of their first squarebody?

No, and no. Had an 81 3/4 ton with a built 350, it was a rust bucket by the time I got it, uncle sold it off and the kid blew it up not much after that.

Also had an 89 K5. Interior was a bit rough but had the original 350 TBI and 700R4. It ran damn good, but the rust was just too much for me to handle.

I was still kind of bummed out about the K5 going away, but if it hadn't, I never would have gotten the one I have currently. Absolutely zero rust, excellent drive train and beautiful interior. If I could just find a K5 in the same shape I could die a happy man, and no way I'm selling this one, she will be with me as long as I am capable of driving.

Still have it after 12 years, in a rebuild right now. Have had 50 plus squares since and always kept this one. My grandpa brought it home for me when I was 16.

I miss the 77' 2wd Blazer that I sold back in 2010 to another forum member. It was rustier than an old battleship, no drive train, and no title........................

Re: Anyone else regret getting rid of their first squarebody?

My first square came back to me last October. I sold it to my father cause he really needed a good running vehicle. Now this 74 C10 SWB stepper had a 1 year old Goodwrench 350 (GMPP 290 HP Crate motor now)when I bought it in Jan 2001 and ran like a top for me for 9 years. I found a nice 67 C10 SWB stepper at the swap meet, called my Pops and offered the 74 to him. Well after 9 months of nothing but problems he DESTROYED the engine in it. I had to buy it back less the engine and the stereo stolen out of it. ARRRRGGGGGG!

Oh well it will have to find a new home one day, but for now it is a huge paper weight in my garage.

Re: Anyone else regret getting rid of their first squarebody?

Yes...

It was an '86 Reg cab, long box, C10, 350/TH350. It was doeskin tan. It was in decent shape when I bought it but it turned pretty rough after driving it year round in wisconsin for 4 years. It was savable but it was really rough and I had two other trucks at the time. I did really like it though, many good times in it.

No. I have owned 5 of them in my life and have no emotional attachment to them...it is just a vehicle and GM made quite a few of them.

Re: Anyone else regret getting rid of their first squarebody?

I miss my 1st one but the one I miss the most is my 2nd square. It was the ugliest truck I have owned but it was the best!! 1979 LWB 4wd 454/th400 that was 2 tone brown/tan on the bed and one of the doors and 2 tone Silver/maroon everywhere else with a caved in front p/s door. It ran like a scalded @$$ ape and was a blast to drive. I used to surprise the snot out of unsuspecting sports cars and ricers when they would rev their engines and want to run to the next stop light!!

Re: Anyone else regret getting rid of their first squarebody?

Gave away my 74 LB C20 Michigan rust bucket after owning it for 21 years. Gave it to a coworker who found the current 83 C20 for me. It was a 454/400 and he pulled the 454/400 out of it and junked the rest. He races pro stock and I image the engine/trans lives on in a race car somewhere now. I don't regret getting rid of it but now I know there was $700-$900 of parts in it, so maybe I was too generous. That 454/400 was the best engine/trans combo I ever had - the fastest one too.

Re: Anyone else regret getting rid of their first squarebody?

There is a great thread over on the 4x4 side entitled, "40 years with my truck". Guy bought his step side brand new while still in high school, 40 years ago. Well worth the read.

Thanks! It is a 78. Russet brown / buckskin I think is what the colors were called.

I love that color combo. It reminds me of when I was in High School. The kid who's grandpaw owned the Chevrolet dealer had a identical truck to yours, man was I jealous!

Re: Anyone else regret getting rid of their first squarebody?

I've still got my first truck. An '85 GMC 3/4 4wd purchased new for $11,997 out the door so I haven't had the chance to miss it.

Pardon my ignorance but what is a "square body"? Apparently I have one but not sure what the definition is.

Square body is just a nickname given to the 73 to 87 style of truck . The 73 to 80 trucks , were so square in shape it got the name rolling . The term is also used in the garment industry and in engineering to describe straight flowing lines .

Re: Anyone else regret getting rid of their first squarebody?

I was thinking about this thread on the way into work this morning. Reminded me of another square that my stepfather had me cut up and part out when I was around 12 or 13. It had been hit in the front and the frame and front body were bent up but the cab and doors were rust free. I stripped it and cut / unbolted the cab and bed off the frame. Then I set about cutting up the cab to take it in for scrap. The corners were good so my step father assumed I'd cut those sections out and save them, bu I must have been pissed about something... Because I beat a hole in each one with a small short handle sledge hammer.

Guess that's what you get when you have a kid scrapping cars for you!
