Out of curiosity what is scrap where you are? Last thing I hauled was .105/lb. Also, scrap yards don't deduct for glass.

Re: Another Round of WHATS IT WEIGH?!

Hard to watch the trucks get scrapped.
But cost wise ,I'd want a whole running truck
Up here we would pay a grand for a rust free truck shell
But getting it home would cost lots too

Re: Another Round of WHATS IT WEIGH?!

scrapped a 4wd 1/2 ton burb last year, was missing the front clip and the transmission, but it had the engine and t-case. Filled it with doors and bumpers and drums and rotors, got $406 for it. 2 weeks ago I scrapped my 88 parts Blazer, intact except for the wheels and tires I kept, about 300lbs of junks steel thrown inside, got $549 for it.

Re: Another Round of WHATS IT WEIGH?!

The scrap iron we pile inside of these before hauling them off really does not weigh a bunch. The sheet metal from modern vehicles is so thin it takes a lot to make some good weight.

It weighed in at 4660 across the scales and put $500 and some change (coin change) in my pocket. I really thought scrap was paying more than that right now and am thinking next time I'll shop it a bit before just going to the closest one.

Re: Another Round of WHATS IT WEIGH?!

Shipping would cost over a grand.
Would you have given $2000 for a body?

You should look on OKC and Dallas Craigslist.
You could buy a running Burb, a one way plane ticket, and fuel to drive it home.

Re: Another Round of WHATS IT WEIGH?!

Going over the #'s on this one (I started keeping an excel spreadsheet on these as I do them) and I think I'll try and keep it up with the 'burbans rather than trucks.

Initial investment, $500 + $50 in gas. So far not including scrap brought in $700 roughly. Add $500 for the scrap minus $100 I gave to my body tech for all his help getting it to the scales. I still have, in my estimation from previous sales, $400 worth of stuff easy. Not a bad little hobby now that I'm used to the craigslist freaks.

Plus using these to load up with our scrap has saved me from having to either build walls for my trailer or buying another trailer to haul scrap off with. I'm tired of having some junker come in and just take our scrap iron, it's like money just out the door in my opinion. We might not make a great deal of money from it, but more than enough to buy a few lunches for the shop and make it worth our while.

Re: Another Round of WHATS IT WEIGH?!

Right on!

Seeing all the stuff on Craigslist around OKC, I really wanted to do the same and build an inventory of square body parts, unfortunately I didn't have the required space....

Needless to say:
I'm jealous of your parts room
