Re: What are you guys doing for Security
If they really want it, they're gonna take it but I'm thinking several layers, most have been mentioned already. The big thing is if it's in a stock location, they know how to bypass it. Throw them curves and they'll leave before they figure things out.
Gas tank will be under the bed, remote license plate latch. Non traditional key ignition (Think Saab) in unusual place with wiring that's not out in the open and sturdier steering wheel lock. Dual hood latches (Solstice). Not typical door locks in unusual place. I'm thinking leaving stock door handles in stock place but suicide doors and Corvette handles hidden by mirror. Hidden battery. Fuel cutoff after short time. Those with manuals already have an advantage, most thieves now don't know how to drive a stick! |

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
Ignition cut off, agreed value insurance is what I did. It is so hidden that sometimes I even forget where it is.

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
If you don't want to have to deal with resetting a cutoff, you could use a keyless entry, remote start or other device to disable it.Just wire it with a relay to a fuel or elect(maybe both) cutoff and have the remote operate a relay.

A lot of good ideas some I will do especially the agreed value insurance, like some said if they want it they will get it we just need to slow them down.

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
I'm 19, I asked one of my bestfriends that I've known almost all my life, he's 57, he smiled and said "Don't paint it bud!"
But, I'm puttin a battery disconnect switch on with, also with a manual fuel shut off, which is how 6BT Cummins are shut off anyways, but they'll be hidden (: |

I like this idea:: Anti Code Grabbing Wireless Transponder 3 Point Immobilizer...
3 Point immobilization: starter, ignition, fuel pump Two anti-code grabbing transponder RFID tags Anti-scan technology Reprogrammable if tags lost Self learning: controlled by PIN number Can learn up to five user tags Emergency override PIN number programmable 264 Codes possible Five to six inch tag range 30 Second passive arming 60 second tag search Siren output Ground output when armed Flashing bright red status LED 30Amp per circuit Three 40Amp sealed relays on board Normally open (N/O) relay contacts Fail safe circuits with status memory |

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
There are a lot of good ideas to keep it from running, but how do you stop a couple guys from hooking on a chain and pulling it down the road. Unlike newer vehicles the steering does not lock and the auto columns don't lock in park either. I have a late 70's tilt column in my Blazer now that takes care of this, but I'm going to remove it for an original style column and would like to regain this minimal protection.

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
Agreed value insurance and Lojack. A crook with the ability to tow will defeat kill switches and alarms.
Edit: Add kill switch for the petty thieves. Post #1000!!! Woohoo!!

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
Couldn't something like a Line Lock be put on the brake system using a solenoid?

Here's one I've been looking at. Kinda expensive up-front but low yearly maintenance fees. You control everything from your iPhone.

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
I got this AWESOME kill switch from S&W. Because it doesn't always work the first time for some people, they give you nine more chances. Has "40 cal" engraved on the side! The closer the potential thief is to your truck, the better it works! It will even give their friends something to think about.

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
I was wondering, now that I have my dash completely apart, where is the best place to tap into the trucks wiring for a Kill Switch that would be hard to find?
Also, I was wondering if it might be better to install a Kill Switch hooked to an added 12ga wire grounding the coil. That way if someone tries to hot-wire around the ignition, it just shorts everything out. You would need to have that Kill Switch be a dual-pole switch that also disconnects power to the ignition so you don't have damage if you forget to release the Kill Switch before starting your rig. What do you think about this method? I like a multi-level approach including some of the good ideas mentioned above. Thanks for the suggestions, Gary |

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
Just put another dimmer switch in your floor, take your key on start wire thru it then to your distributor. If it wont start they wont mess with it very long.

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
Lower, ya beat me to it, that's what I will do, but, open the coil circuit, turns over, but no start. Also, if you slam your truck on the tires, and can take your controller with you, then might be able to start, but can't drive it away.

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
If the truck doesn't move that often you can get a wheel boot. a ground anchor or a u-pipe in the ground where you can slip a chain through, best installed on new contruction but you can retrofit.

Re: What are you guys doing for Security
I just keep my truck in my locked garage.
However, I went to a show and stayed over night at a hotel. I pulled the fuel pump relay out. It would take a long time for a thief to figure that one out (especially with all the wires of a LSx engine I need to do something more. Probably more to my garage, cause if they got in there sits two SWBs and thousands of dollars of tools. Also, on these trucks the way the ignition switch is on the dash, its so easy to pop the connecter off the back and hot wire them. Plus, I can use my 68's key to start my 69....I've done it by accident several times. |
