He said he got it from a guy that had it in his barn, took it off when the truck was new to put on a camper. It looks original to me. It is heavy, I can tell you that. I feel kinda bad, I'm sure he didn't know what he had. Is there a sure way to tell if its original?
THe easiest way to tell if it's original is to look at the welds on the ends and the spot welds in the recessed areas. There are a couple companies making gates stamped with the lettering and they weigh the same but the welds are actually better...

Re: Look what I scored!

I'll bet there are a few more of those tailgates lying aroung in garage or basements that were taken off when new because of a Camper.

In this pic, you can see the top of the screws are in fact PAINTED body color. Please ignore the tiny dent

My original 69' gate I scored last year for $100!

Yep! My 69 gate was taken off in early 70 for a camper installation and was barned (not basemented ) ever since!
Very cool, nice score 70STOVEBOLT! I've stripped mine down to bare metal [recently] and it's

To add to VA72C10's comments, for originality, also try and see if you can spot a NUMBER stamp on the Driver's side, bottom / inside.
See my thread for more pics. Bet the aftermarket gates don't stamp them like this

You'd be surprised what gearheads, especially bachelors, will put in their basements.

Yeah, the color is not my favorite, it's gonna end up medium blue or medium blue/white.

What do I look for on the welds? Are they in different places?

Smile Re: Look what I scored!

Very Nice!!!!
I'll bet it came off a camper equipped truck and got removed and set aside for years somewhere in storage.
I was fortunate with my 1/2 ton that my tailgate was removed and put in storage since near/new when the original owner put on a small cap with a back drop door. Luckily it was still in the garage behind some boxes...in super condition.
Great Score!!!!....good to know lightening still strikes.

No clue. I'd guess and say it was stamped by the steel plant.
Maybe to signify the metal for stamping to shape, so GM could identify etc...
