Re: Does your truck have family history?
My 1965 was purchased by my father in 1966. It was his daily driver 100% of the time when I was growing up. My mother owned different cars through the years, but this was the only vehicle my father owned. Snow, rain, summertime heat, it didn't matter. I didn't know any different. If you were hot, you opened the wing window. If it was cold, well... you put on another jacket. There was always a rag close by so you could wipe off the windshield when it fogged up. I have five sisters and everyone of them, except the youngest, learned to drive with it. It's been stolen twice and recovered twice. When I first went to work for the railroad, I was on the road for months at a time. One time I came home and the truck was gone. My dad sold it. Just like that. I was shocked to say the least. I figured I had seen the last of it. Fast forward a couple of years. I was walking my dog one day and about 5 blocks from my house, there it was. No doubt in my mind. It was sitting in the parking lot of a moving company. I left a note on the windshield with my number and I owned it the next day. I've had it ever since and I can honestly say that I'll never sell it. I have a picture of it with my older sister hanging out of the driver's window when she was about five. She's 40 now. One of these days, I'll scan it so I can share.

Re: Does your truck have family history?
My truck belong to my dad who purchased it new in 1966, I was born in 68. He sold it some time around 2002. He died in late 2010 which is when I tried to buy the truck back which took about 3 months to get. I learned to drive in this truck and have taken more trips to the hunting lease and lake than I can remember.

Re: Does your truck have family history?
It was very fortunate you could even find it, let alone buy it back.

Re: Does your truck have family history?
Other memories in this truck:
4 people in the front seat at 4am going to the hunting lease Me and my friend riding in the back for 45 miles cleaning the dove we just shot, feathers were flying out of the back like crazy And making a right hand turn and having the under dash AC unit dump ICE COLD water right down your shoe

Re: Does your truck have family history?
The '65 I have was bought new by the great Uncle of a friend who works with my wife. I have most all the original paperwork. Apparently this guy and his old Uncle were close. After he died the truck sat. The nephew bought it and paid someone to get it road-worthy several years ago. He would drive it to the dump now and again, but mainly it sat. HE offered to sell it to me, but the timing wasn't right for me. A couple of months ago he offered to give me the truck if I planned on fixing it up.

Re: Does your truck have family history?
Hope you don't mind if I play, even though I have a "square body"....
I ordered my '87 new and drove it off the assembly line myself. I drove it for three or four years, here in Michigan and then in Arizona, and sold it to my father in law. He had it all these years and then when he passed away the family asked if I wanted it back. I intially said "no", but eventually.... Any way, here it is today: it'll be 26 years old in September, currently has 198,000 miles. Same kid, same truck:

Great truck and history. Very cool that you drove it off the assembly line.

Re: Does your truck have family history?
Sure looks like it was well cared for all those years. Funny how the kids seem to get so much older while we hardly age at all!

There is no doubt, Kieth,....100 % of the guys and gals on this site would absolutely cherrish the thought of drivin' their truck off the line. To leave the "get ready" line in yer own All American Classic Chevy Truck.....and then be the guy still driving it all these many years later... Awesome.

Re: Does your truck have family history?
I bought my 65 from my Father in law in 1981. He didn't buy it new,he bought it in the mid seventies and it took me til 81 to talk him into selling it to me. I drove it to work daily for over 20 years. A little over 3 years ago I took it apart to restore it . Unfortunately shortly after that the economy went in the toilet and my income took a serious hit. My truck budget went from very limited to almost nonexistent so it is taking a lot longer than I had hoped but I will get there eventually.

Re: Does your truck have family history?
Thanks for the encouragement, guys.
It was pretty beat cosmetically when I got it back; mechanicals were good. It took from May to September to getting it looking like you see here. The whole story (and all the gory details) are linked below, in my build/into thread. K

Re: Does your truck have family history?
Even though it's not a 60-66, I'll throw mine in here.
My 67 C10 was bought brand new by my Great Grandfather in 67. I still have his "protecto plate" and all the paperwork from when it was bought. When he passed my great uncle got it for a few years and let it sit, then I finally got it He also left me his 1946 Ford 2n tractor, (excuse the Ford), which will be restored when I'm done with the C10. Body is rough, and the steering is sloppy, but it runs like brand new, and even has the Sherman range box. Also, even though it's not "family owned" history, as long as I can remember, I would go with my dad on Sunday mornings before church to the fire department to do equipment checks, and we would take rides in each of the fire trucks to make sure there were no issues and top off the fuel. Even though I've only owned the 78 K30 for a few years, I've ridden in it for the last 24 years.

Re: Does your truck have family history?
not really..
I bought it from a guy who bought it from his cousin who was rebuilding it. His cousin had just got a divorce and moved back in with his momma and didn't have room for it with all his other vehicles... Lucky for me his cousin was anal retentive...kept all parts receipts, and a book with every oil change since the engine was swapped from a 350 to a 305 in 2003. So $2500 in receipts and a running total of mileage on the new 305 crate..... 132,000 total miles on truck...about 65,000 miles on the 305 Either way he was a nice guy and had just got a cavi from his father who had passed and wanted to drive it instead so he sold it to me for the $1500 he paid his cousin for it.... Thats the story

Re: Does your truck have family history?
MINE DOES!!! And this is also my introduction My name is Yves I' m an automotive electronic technician in ontario so here is my story. It's a 1963 GMC 3/4 TON Long Box. Since i was a baby I drove around in this truck and growing up i always pictured driving this with my son. Letting him steer the wheel while i drove like my dad did with me. I'm almost 32 now. Over 15 years ago this truck left my family. And i've always had it in my head and heart that i would find it and get it back. I've tried for years. Well this is how my day yesterday started I was sent an email about a guy finding his dads old car after 5 years of searching. After that a good buddy of mine posted a 1965 Blue GMC for sale on my facebook wall the year didnt match but color and approx location did. I replied over and over with no response. Well my dad did some hunting and called me at 9pm. It was his truck and is now back in my family and will hopefully never leave it again. I cant wait to restore this with my father Its been a life long dream that has finally came true. I have to pick it up in the morning. I dont have pictures but will post them as soon as i can. I know its not going to be pretty because from what i know the guy bought it and never did anything with it so its been sitting for 15 years.
I also own a 1980 chev 4x4 long box that i've been building for a little while i'll post pictures off as well. |

Re: Does your truck have family history?
Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to doing this. I will document everything, I did for the 80'. Being where it is now and seeing where it was a year ago. You'd be amazed and for me not having a garage and doing it all in my driveway i'm amazed myself. Most people thought i was crazy and couldn't do it. At least now they know I'm completely crazy and can do it lmao. I'm going to be researching this forum top to bottom to help me on this one i want to bag it. I'm sure there's plenty of info on here.

Re: Does your truck have family history?
Searching the forum can be tedious and frustrating. To improve your search results, click the search button and select “Advanced Search” at the bottom. That will take you to a new search window. Enter your topic in the “Keyword” field (upper left). If you can’t find what you want try other terms. For example air bags could also be just bags, or springs, or air springs, or simply air (or any other number of expressions). The system does require a 1 minute wait between searches however.
If you know the name of a forum member that specializes in what you’re after, enter their name in the “User Name” field. This will restrict the results to things that person participated in. If you don’t know, just leave it blank. If you know a forum member initiated a specific thread you’re looking for – click on the drop down box that says “Find Posts by User” and select the other drop down entry “Find Threads Started by User”. If you want to narrow the results to just 60-66 threads, click on “The 1960-1966 Chevrolet &GMC Pickups Message Board. If you are looking for subjects that overlap into other year models (for example 1963-1972 chassis related topics) just let it default to “Search All Open Forums”, or search the 60-66 forum, and then search again under 67-72 forum. And if all else fails, post a question and someone will likely know the information or thread you’re after. Happy hunting!
