Re: How many still have stock tank in place?

# 29 here, but I am cheating since my panel is under the bed from the factory LOL

But when I had a pickup it was in the cab and my next one will be there as well.

Stock in my 64. I have to fill it up twice as much, but it makes me feel better that it only takes about $30 to fill up.

Re: How many still have stock tank in place?

Must make me 31. Have an auxiliary side saddle tank but still run the cab tank as primary.

I remember my grandfathers Model A, you could see the gas through the glass window where the gauge is inside the tank and the tank was in front of your knees.

Never heard of one exploding myself either, but if you're not used to fuel tanks inside the drivers compartment I guess it would seem scary to a person.

Illinois. I don't know how big the tank is but I'm guessing about 12 gallons. Either that, or my gas gauge is WAY off. It moves left to right when I drive, so I'm not exactly sure where empty is. The far left hash mark is my guess, but the needle goes way past that when I turn the truck off. I err on the side of caution because I don't want to be stranded.

mines behind the seat at the moment....

Ive never heard of it happening but i can tell you i came close to being a crispy critter in my old 65 so dont rule fire balls out! they had to use the jaws of life to get me out of the truck since i was pinned in by my foot between the trans hump and bottom of the dash....the tank ruptured and i was covered in gas from head to toe,and very lucky nothing sparked in the crash , they cut my cloths off of me in the ambulance since i was saturated in fuel......I plan on relocating the tank under the bed on my 66 but havent yet, i like it behind the seat but think that it is safer out of the cab, in this picture at the tow yard you can see cat litter soaking up the rest of the fuel:

Well first thank god you are alive,

Your second photo shows what GM knew, for the tank to be completely compromised you would have to take a huge hit, as you did, and even with that amount of damage the tank looks intact.

Was the tank ripped or did the fuel come from the filler tube when everything else was shifted?
