I really enjoy going out to garage after the kids are in bed and just taking my time and doing it the way I want to. ALOT of waiting for money or parts. Sounds corny, but for me its all about the journey. Oh and its pretty bad ass too.
I think if you keep that mindset, you will be fine and have more fun. That's how I have always looked at building up my burb, it's been my hobby for as long as I can remember and I am still not "done".

That sounds just like what I said when I started my project: "I'm just gonna' freshen it up, make it a nice driver. Not gonna take the cab off, just do a little body work, squirt some paint on it and done". Next thing I knew my truck was in a thousand pieces in my garage and I spent most of my time (when I wasn't working on the truck) searching parts on the internet. It's ok...it's a sickness. I've been working on mine 1.5 years.

This is when I bought mine in January. It hasn't run since December 1996.

Two days later it was running. 3 days later everything worked and was legal.

Here it is now

That's probably not what you were looking for.

Re: how long did it take to get your truck on the road?

I've had my truck since the early 80s, and it was a daily driver for many years, parked for many years, but pretty much a running driveable truck during that time. These are from about 5/2/2009, when I finally got to the point that I was going to get it painted no matter what. My son and I tore it down to the frame that weekend.

I converted to EFI and added a posi, other than that the drivetrain and suspension were left to the mods I had done in the past. I did all of the bodywork but had a local shop do the final sanding and spray it. I worked evenings and weekends and vacation days, holidays, and as much as my wife would tolerate. The paint was done about 8/1/2011.

I drove it again around labor day weekend 2011. I spent the fall and winter working on details to finish it up. Just replaced the grill and front bumper yesterday. Still have to finish the exhaust and a few more upgrades but I have been driving it since last fall. I was also working on a 72 Jimmy off and on through this time, which is the current major rebuild.

Here what it looked like around 1984...

This is 1987...
