Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?
if your son lowers it and puts wheels dosent mean he has to cut it up and change everything else about the truck, a simple drop and wheels are easy.

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?
Have you noticed how very few bone stock, completely unmodified trucks are still around?
Sooo many had to be dropped, widened, bling-bling wheels installed, outrageous paint jobs applied etc.. I would tell your son, to get his own truck and do whatever he wants. My stepson will be able to get his license in a year and I will not do ANY modifications to my 72 BB. BTW, when I got it, it had chrome wheels. They had to go right away and now I have 6.5 X 16 white painted steel rims on it. Still searching for the white painted dog dish hubcaps. It's back to factory specs. except the souped-up BB. Keep your beautiful truck they way it is. |

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?
Who truck is it mostly? Yours or his? I personally think it would look much better lowered even without a wheel swap, but new (not too blingy) wheels would look great also.

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?
Put a vote in for NOT LOWERING. As a matter of fact, I beg you not to. Get him his own. My guess is this is the first step in a diabolical plan to convince you to give it to him.

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?
My son (16) is looking at buying his first truck/car. He found a 90 something S-10 2wd longbed that his friends dad is selling. We looked at it last night and I was telling him it was too bad it was a longbed and not short and that it would look pretty cool lowered a bit and some nicer wheels. His response "I think I'm going to leave it like this for a while."
Opposite of your situation. Later last night I realized that his truck will be almost exactly the same type of start I had. Older 2wd reg cab longbed with rusty rockers and cab corners. Mine was about 12 years old when I got it and already was being thought of as a classic at the time. His will be slightly older than that already (94-97 style) and nobody is thinking of those as classics are they? In any case, your truck would look good and ride great with a mild drop that is easily removed and could be brought back to original. BUT, I would only do it if it was what you wanted. I lowered mine 3.5" front and rear with a spring drop back in 1986. Thats where it is today and where I plan on keeping it. I don't have any problems with speed bumps or curbs. I can haul a load if I chose to. I love your truck as is, but it wouldn't hurt it to do a spring drop.

WHY.... It comes down to personal preference. Why do some like LWB trucks verse SWB trucks? Why do some like Fleetside verses the stepside? Why do some like red trucks verses green trucks? Its something a father and son can work on together. Purpose... Some like the looks of a lowered. Handling is improved a bit but then agin a truck will always be a truck when it comes to handling. The cool factor of lowered trucks...then again non lowered truaks have a cool factor. This is my story and I'm sticking to it for now.

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?
Nope -- I'd leave it.
One of the best things you can do for him at this point is yes, work on a project together with him .. but if you do it for him to your truck then just give it to him he will not appreciate it as much. If you find another truck to call his own, he can lower it put wheels on it of his own choice and that way he 'built' it with you. He'll wash it every day and just overall appreciate the work that went into it more. One thing's for sure it's one of the best things my pop ever did for me. I had no idea then but I know now why he did it. That was his way to keep me out of trouble. No matter the cost, or the time, etc .. this way he knew exactly where I was, and what I was doing on the weekends. Not to mention the memories you'll build with your son. At 18, he needs you now more than ever. We all know it's a wierd age. Too old to cry, too young to cuss. I'd look for a nice 71+ (for disc brakes) and start HIS truck. The fact is, you'd probably spend about the same on a drop kit and wheels for your truck. ($3k or so) You can find a nice driver for that if you're patient. The black truck is far too nice to lower. I lower everything But that one, I wouldn't do a thing to it. It is far too nice. .. just my .02

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?
Maybe I should have said in most cases if you buy and/or give a vehicle to a 16-18yr old they usually don't appreciate it like they would if they bag groceries or work for the money it takes to get them to the point of this black truck. .. or the feeling of accomplishment when you build your first engine and hear it fire up, etc.
Not in all cases cause I'll be the first to admit my pops helped me and gave me a lot of stuff along the way. .. BUT .. He never just handed me the keys and said 'Be Careful' .. take care of my truck. If you had two trucks, you could show yours beside your son's truck .. Do the Hot Rod power tour together, park them beside each other in the garage, etc. Just extra father and son stuff. That's all I'm sayin.

I think some are saying with two trucks they could have: One for the father and one to the son...they could have a father and son set of trucks. My son gets my truck when I get my wheel chair.

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?
My dad gave my sister a '66 Mustang when she turned 16. A few years later she wanted something "new" and it sat in storage for another 8 years until I turned 16. 24 years later and I still have it.
Just because you give him something doesn't mean he won't appreciate it, it really depends on the kid. That being said, if you both like to wrench you could have a lot of fun memories(and some unpleasant ones possibly) building something together for him to drive. I love the look of a lowered truck but I'd keep yours just how it is. |

Very good point. For me it's Stock versus Modified. Real easy for me to answer. They are stock only once and should be left that way. That's the way I like it and I'm sticking to it. |

Re: my son (18) wants me to lower my truck ?
A simple drop is easily reversable. Have your son buy all the parts. If you decide you want it back to stock height, sell the parts to me.
