Re: Clusters galore

I like what you are doing there. Just thinking, it would be great to have a volts guage in where the ameter guage is where it says BATT. The newer alternators make too many amps for that guage and my American Autowire kit said to not hook it up at all, as it can be a fire hazard. I think they are meant for 30 to 60 amp alternators, and the new ones make 100 or so with all the accesories we put in our trucks nowadays. If you could find a voltmeter that would fit nicely in that spot would be very desirable for all of us. Keep it up, I think you could have a nice sideline business restoring clusters for these trucks and others.

Re: Clusters galore

Great job Jim!

I found a tach and air cluster, but not sure if I will use it being the tach is only 5k RPM. It would be nice if the repops were 8k for the hot rod crowd.

Re: Clusters galore

5K tach would work fine for my stock 230!

Voltmeter from a 94-96 might work in that space:

Re: Clusters galore

Couldn't something be placed inline between the alternator and the gauge that would reduce the current reading? That way the sweep of the gauge could still be used in its current form (i.e., reduce readings from 100 amp alternators to 45 amps so the needle appears in the middle of the gauge sweep when the alternator is functioning properly). I have limited knowledge of automotive electronics so I can't say what could be used, but surely there is something that can be used for this purpose...

Re: Clusters galore

The factory ammeter is a shunt type of ammeter, no real curent flows thru them, they work by sensing a voltage difference. I added 2 amp fuses on mine like 67-72s use. It has been working fine 3+ yrs now, using a 100amp delco alt.

Nice clusters guys. I just pulled mine last night. Not sure yet if I will go back stock or do something different.

There a guy who does 8K conversions on the stock tachs. Hes in VA, I'll try and find his info.

Re: Clusters galore

That would be great.

I didn't get the sending unit under the hood, and now the donor truck is gone. I wonder if it can be converted so I don't need it. Or was it only the aftermarket tachs that had that...?

Know what I'm taking about?

That'd be my buddy Gentry, at AutoInstruments. I've done a bunch of magazine stories with him over the years.
Concours-quality restoration, but he can also just mechanically rebuild your gauges too.
He'll restore your tach, or convert it to work with modern electronic ignitions too.
