Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

Boy you aint kidding I have a fire extinguisher in the house and in my vehicles, reminds me of a story, neighbor across the street was messing with his old fuel injected caddy, no start..... he had the plugs out and I could smell fuel all the way across the street, apparently master pro mechanic nephew of his was trin to get it running, I yelled across the street to disconnect the coil before spinning it over, he said" Yea Yea" and not 2 minutes later I see a huge fireball... I yell fire fire! and the wifey is on her game, grabbed the halon extinguisher from the kitchen, ran out the door and ran me over and across the street she went...... She had it out pretty quick, neighboors just standing there in a panic watching it burn.... another 30 seconds it would have engulfed there house...... He was happy to buy me another extingusher, and he got one for himself.... I am 100% agreed to have an extingusher, you would be amazed how fast and flammable liquids in a car are when hot enough.... P/S fluid and antifreeze is like gasoline when circumstances right........

Halon is the best for the money, but if funds tight at least get an ABC powder one..... it makes a mess, but cheaper then a new car or even your house.....

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

If you can find one a pressurized water extiguisher is handy in the shop. You can just fill it up and use the air hose to pressure it back up after you use it. It will take care of those paper and rag fires. If it's electrical or fuel the you can use the powder. Both are very effective on their class of fires. Halon is another very good option but is more expensive.

I work with jet fuel and liquid oxygen in the military and can assure you you cannot afford to not have one.

Here is a link to fire bottle inspections and what happens at each interval.
http://www.icreatables.com/codes/fir...nspection.html

Remember to visually inspect them monthly. Here is a simple tag to sign off monthly. There are many others on line this is just a option.

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

My buddy has a bunch of extinguishers around his house... they went out of date and the company he worked for threw them all away... he went dumpster diving and brought about 10 home... all were still reading green...

We went up to his cabin in GA and were cleaning up the property right before Christmas and we had a small bon fire going... I walk in the cabin to grab a drink, he tossed a small box on the fire and come in the house to grab something from the back room.... I look out the storm door and I see the fire coming up the hill... it had jumped about 6 feet away from the fire in 20/30 seconds... A gust of wind blew the box out if the fire and onto the grass. By the time I got out the door and tried to stomp it out it had jumped 10 feet. I would say it was doubling every 30 seconds... As my feet and legs got hot I realized kicking it wasn't gunna get it done. My buddy ran to get a hose, and ran right past the extinguisher. Then I remembered it and grabbed it. I had the fire out in 15 seconds. He said he looked up and all he saw was a cloud of white... only problem with the extinguisher was once I popped it, it went till it was empty...

2 weeks later we were at the swap meet and a guy was selling 4 extinguishers, my buddy bought all 4 and gave me one... now I have one in my wood shop, I need one for the kitchen, back padio, and I want one of my truck... soon. my Wife thinks its funny that I point them out everywhere we go... everywhere. They just pop out to me now.

I have two 3 gallon pressurized water extinguishers in the house and one in the shop. It's nice to be able to fill them yourself. I always take them out with me when I am burning brush or grass. Another nice thing about them is that they will spray 25-30 feet if they are fully charged, or you can hold your thumb over the nozzle and get a fine mist out of them. I knocked down a kitchen fire once that had flashed over and was fully involved. That sold me on them....

I bought two of mine at a city auction and one at a Goodwill store.

I keep the ABC's close to them so I can grab either one or both.

Powder will put it out best but is very corrosive to all your wires and anything electrical. Granted if you are putting out a fire just the wires isn't necesarily your biggest concern. The liquid would be best not to make anymore damage than has already happened. I am in the navy and my duty station I just left was as a submarine firefighting instructor. We had a monte carlo catch on fire and we put it out with the powder and they ended up totalling the car because everything under the hood was shot because of it. But powder is very effective.

With the pressurized one's it sounds crazy but you can mix in dawn with it and the foam once it comes out will help you put out the fire even more. Water just takes away the heat but the foam from the dawn will also smother the fire.

yep put a little dish soap in the pressurized water cans. It reduces the surface tension of the water and makes water wetter if that makes sense...

Talking Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

Very good advice, from everyone.all kidding aside, back in high school, my best friend (now "Brother in law") was rebuilding a dune buggy transmission/trans-axle from a Chevy Corvair, any way's, to make a long story short, he was getting ready to start it after re-installing it in the dune buggy, and the auto shop instructor told me to grab an extinguisher and have it ready,"but Don't Squeeze The Trigger Unless I say" needless to say, once my brother in law turned the key, it back fired through the carb, and a small flame was burning. The instructor was trying to blow it out, with no luck, and about the time he inhaled to try it again, "You-Know -Who" pulled the trigger......I looked over to see his "Angry Scowl" (albeit covered in yellow fire extinguishing powder......) you could have cooked a three course breakfast off his face, he was that pissed.....I'm still laughing about it, by the way, does anyone know what a "Honyaak" is?
I think I had a pretty good idea, but still, didn't know what he meant......its all good.....By the way, even though I did all the welding on my truck in my garage at home, I never had an extinguisher, guess I should count my blessings and I'm bringing two extinguishers home tomorrow!!!
Have a great evening!
Ben

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

Ok so I'm reading the descriptions from Home Depot, i know i want an ABC type, can someone explain the following?

Kidde Pro 210: 2-A:10-B:C Fire Extinguisher.
Kidde: 3-A: 40-B:C Fire Extinguisher.

Are the numbers percentages of how well it does for each class?

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

I'd get you guys pics if my camera would download to my computer.

I carry a CO2 extinguisher along with a small BC unit in my car's trunk. EVERY time I stop for gas, I get the CO2 unit out and set it by the pump.

I've gotten a few "is that your work vehicle?" and a couple of guys have asked if I have burned my car up before. No, I just saw it happen to a guy on TV. He had bought a real "supercar," some 200K dollar plus mid-engine and then burned it up with a static discharge ignition of the fumes at the pump. He only had liability on it too.

In my garage and house, I have extinguishers in nearly every room. Both large and small. In my rental properties, same story. I like to have one (ABC) in each bedroom, kitchen, and living room.

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

I've got a couple of these bad boy Ansul Redlines around...one in the house garage, one in the shop.

My dad works for Ansul, so he gets them dirt cheap...which is great since they are normally a $550 extinguisher.

I also have one of these in the Blazer....after having an engine fire about 15 years ago, every one of my hot rods will have one. The nice thing is, that the Halotron is an ABC extinguisher, but leaves no residue and mess to clean up. Cleaning up the nasty try chemical was almost as bad as having the fire in the first place.

The problem with racing IN the garage are the runs are so short. Hopefully that wasn't a Sunbird Turbo GT or they'd be over even quicker!

For the topic at hand, Costco often has them in 3-packs that sometimes wind up cheaper.

Here you go $19.95 each delivered to your door (ie: free shipping):

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

back in 04 the paint repair guys at my work had an old Dodge van that they used for a mobile shed, this thing was loaded with paints, chemicals and also a small air compressor. Well one day they were trying to park it and a transmission line split open. started puking atf all over the exhaust. van caught on fire quick. the dude driving, panicked and managed to park it between my Silverado and a Avalon. talk about going up in smoke quick. all three vehicles were toast. the ironic thing was there was a large fire extinguisher hanging right above the driver seat, that they would bang their head on getting in and out of the van. more than likely would have put this fire out.

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

I used to work as a grunt at a shop that prepped the Baja off-road racing jeeps for I think it was a Parnelli Jones sponsored truck in the San Diego area

I remember seeing plumbed-in lines with little brass spray heads mounted on the roll bars and pointing in towards the cabin.

I understood at the time that they were part of the fire suppression system - in event of a fire this was supposed to fill the cabin with foam (I guess) - probably not halon since that would suffocate you if you are conked out..

But anyway since lot of us are driving around at 65 plus MPH with 18 gallons of fuel right inside the cab I wonder if anyone knows any more about these plumbed-in fire suppression systems? Is this something required by the race or was it unique to the sponsor?

It was for the Baja 1000 - but it was circa 198o's something like that - big ole race.

Here is Terrible Herbst who dominated around then

Re: Go buy a fire extinguisher! DO IT!

I was stationed at ft carson colorado back in the lat eighties. had a need for afire extinguisher. grabed one and it did not work, grabed several others and they didnot work. grabbed a totalof seven fire extinguishers.none worked. helpless to watch 70k$ worth of equipment self destruct. brand new too.

every one of the fire extinguishers had zero pressure and none had been inspected or serviced in over 2 years.
