Thanks I plan on breaking it into a few smaller projects. Frame and suspension, drive train, body work, interior work

Ya I'm just breaking it into smaller parts frame,drivetrain,body, interior etc each one is a seperate project haha

That's kind of the Idea behind it is the subtlety. Also wondering I anyone knows where I can find the dust cover for the hanger bearing or is there only one in the front?

ok so i was rushed at work to type this stuff, let me clarify. Is there only one bearing dust cover or two on the hanger bearing? and is there any guides on building the stock transmission?

Idk about the dust cover but as far as rebuilding your trans which from the pic looks like a sm465,I would not go into that if your not familiar with them. The clutch and stuff is straight forward though if your mechanically inclined. It all depends on your automotive skill level. But there are books on how to rebuild them to be read. Those transmissions are about as bullet proof as they get. Do you know it to be in need of rebuilding or do you just want to as a precaution.

More or less so I can get the linkages right and make sure I build that portion of the drive train correctly. He said the transmission was rebuilt but we all know what that means.. And as for the support bearing ill post a picture to give you guys an idea of what I mean.

Just got the motor it's a 283.. Not what was expected but o well. What's the best I can do for this motor for hp torque or high reving? I want to squeal some tires

Well 283's aren't really known as torquey engines. The worst thing you can do to a 283 is over cam them. I built many in the 90's and they are awesome power plants. My advice is an rv style camshaft of 420 or less lift and some 305 small valve heads. This will give the best throttle response and still be able to smoke the tires some. Your granny sm465 isn't the best choice for a fast shifting tire smoking truck anyway IMHO.

ya I`ve already started looking for a 4 speed transmission and a guy at work has one for sale for 300$ so i might just on that in a bit. I`ll ask him what kind of transmission it is monday. in the mean time here are some pictures.

the dust cap I`m looking for, i assume its fairly important


and some pictures of the motor, what would be a good cleaner for this greasy thing

To me it looks as though that engine might need an overbore due to the rust and galling in the cylinders. So I would not bother to clean it,the machine shop will have to hot tank that block anyhow.

Well if you want my advice,if your not dead set on using the 283 and your trying to cut costs I would try to find a running powertrain out of another car or truck. I look for vehicles in the 1970 to 1975 for 350's or up to 1985 for 305's.

By the time you have the machine work to block and crank and get new pistons,cam and bearing set you'll be in over 1200 bucks easy. A used engine in good condition can be had for just a couple hundred.

Managed to get a second hanger bearing dust cover off eBay, now the next portion is to find interchangeable parts that bolt on. I'm looking for power steering and front disc brakes which have been previously mentioned I believe. Also a gas tank I've seen some threads on using ones from camaros etc but I want to put on a hidden hitch aswell. If I can get dimensions of a hitch and tank I might even be able to weld then up out of stainless an mild steel

i thought it was going to post a picture here i'm doing it via computer now.

it seems the transmission and motor doesnt exactly um match up.


and heres some casting numbers i took pictures of as i went












couple mock up pictures also an easy way to clear some room in the garage, but i will be mocking up the exhaust while i work on the funds to get my front disc conversion kit leaving the rears as drum i will also more then likely pick up my drop springs at the same time. front end is all apart an i am looking into a way of doing a p/s set up for cheap

Well I have a 4 speed with an aluminum bell housing lined up for 400$ complete just waiting on casting numbers and I'm looking into the machining work for the 283. Also I might stick with the 6 bolt and have this as a small welding rig too so it might even get patinad, what component would I need for a front disc conversion specifically if any has the knowledge or has done this?
