Re: 1971 custom 20 w/ camper

See if there is a number stamped beside the key hole on the back door handle. If so I will try and look it up in my code books. If I was there I could have that thing opened in about 15 seconds... LockDoc

Re: 1971 custom 20 w/ camper
PM me your name and address and I will send you a key to try. There are 3 possibilities (Chicago, Hudson, & Yale) but I'm betting it's a Yale lock... LockDoc

Re: 1971 custom 20 w/ camper
Not a bad find for the price. The top of that camper either raises and lowers by hydraulics or by a sort of cable or chain setup. It looks similar to the Alaska campers that are still sold. The top section drops down to help improve wind resistance and gas mileage.
I'd almost bet that the truck spent a lot of years backed into a shed or carport with the nose exposed and that is why the hood and tops of the fenders are that way. On the title issue. You may have to do some running back and forth but if the seller is the executor of the estate or documented heir to the estate and there are registration papers or even the last license plate and vin number you should be able to have them go with you to their state's dmv and do a title transfer. We did that on a camper that a lady gave me here. She had all of her ducks in a row and had a copy of his death certificate and the papers that showed she was the executor of the estate. It took under 15 minutes to do all of the paper work and be out of there with a new license plate, registration and title in the mail. It can be done right without a lot of hassles. I'm not sure about living in one state and getting a title in another state but that can be worked out most of the time. |

Re: 1971 custom 20 w/ camper
In Rhode Island if you had an old registration and a bill of sale you could register it with no title at all. Being that old they wouldn't even do a vin check for out of state either. Any way nice score ! That was an awsum price for that truck,Hope you don't wind up parting it.I hate seeing nice rigs like that getting torn apart. Good Luck!

Re: 1971 custom 20 w/ camper
Ok, update. I got keys for the ignition, it turns over, will start this weekend. Got the side bed toolbox open and it was full of tools. The camper was a mess but full, it needs some cleaning and some of the veneer is peeling. I have attached pics of the camper interior, the engine bay and the tail gate I found in the camper (the tail gate nor the camper have been cleaned yet.)

Re: 1971 custom 20 w/ camper
. . . .
Are there any "remains" of a valve cover sticker under that dirt on the passenger side ? If so, can you take a close-up picture of it ? THANKS . . . . |

Re: 1971 custom 20 w/ camper
i like it - congrats on the successful break-in! I had to stare for a while, but it just dawned on me that the camper has the long extension past the tailgate, but NO cabover section. Never saw one like that! Congrats - cool find.

Re: 1971 custom 20 w/ camper
In concept it is the same as the 10' Alaskan but goes one further by blocking out the back for enclosed storage. The only real drawback is it won't fit on a Longhorn, any C30 pickup or the long service bodies that were also popular at the time. Bet even with a front mount spare this was light on the front end.

Re: 1971 custom 20 w/ camper
Did some more excavating in the camper and found more stuff, I found the original California black plates for the truck , an old gold mining pan and the camper equipment. I kind of figured out how to raise the camper....sort of. There are only two stands and it seems one goes on each side and it just sits under the lip of the camper and raises it. Problem is that this doesnt seem safe and they are not tall enough to raise the camper to its full height. There aren't any brackets on the camper itself for anything to hook to. I did locate a small door that has a gear looking mech in it but cant figure it out??

Did you find a crank yet? The camper has four stainless steel cables and cranks up. The gear apparatus is probably the winch that raises the top. Read this ad. You might mention too that the key cut from the code worked so people that read this thread will know that is an option, if they don't have a key for their camper door handle.. LockDoc
