Was a great night project for the wifey and I after the kid went to bed. A few shots of liquor, and before you knew it we were brush painting the night away..[/quote]
Dang. Nice work. No nicks or spots peeling from weather or from washing? Looks great. |

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?
I wasn't all that much of a one except on the custom cars but I want them with the built in the mid 50's look that I want for the 48 this time around. It won't be a totally period perfect 50's build but it will have modifications to the body that could have been done by a custom body shop on their "shop truck" back in the day to advertise their skills. One that they would drive daily and park out in front of the shop but also display at shows.

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?
My 59 Apache, with before & after pics. The first two shots are in San Diego as purchased with BF Goodrich TA's all round.
When I got her back home to Melbourne Australia I simply did a 4" rear leaf drop, H78 & L78's Cokers. To my suprise it drives so much smoother with the Cokers & still going strong!

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?
i keep hearing horror stories about bias plys. Bad ride quality, bad in weather, etc. How are they compared to radials for a non-daily driver.

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?
About 45 years back, in New Zealand, vintage whitewalls were about as hard to get as money was & my father was building a 1928 Citroen roadster.
He used a "rubber paint" (probably a latex) on his new 18 inch tyres and with a brush update each year, they looked like new till he eventually sold the car. If I cant get a set of BFG Silvertowns when the tyres wear out on my truck, Im going to buy blackwalls and paint them next time. |

Personally, I would never use a bias ply tyre on any of my projects, and my truck has jag suspension and power steering. And I make no apologies and use it as one of the two vehicles in my "daily driver" fleet. The other is a modified Fiat Topolino with a small Toyota engine thats great on gas (we pay about $8 per gallon here) I have good mates who would never put a radial on a car built before the mid 60s, and are happy to live with the compromises that brings with it. I guess it comes down to how far you need to drive the "non-daily driver" and what your roads are like. |

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?
Hey TX58, there is a guy on Jensen in Houston that will grind any whitewall tire to get the max white for 15.00 a tire. They come out perfect.

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?
Go to youtube type in "whitewall shaving" all white letter tires or whitewall tires have about 2 inches or more of white rubber underneath they mount tire on a machine that spins the tire and an arm with a blade cuts into it as it spins.

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?
Some of the white letter tires don't have a real good band of white all the way around though as the seam can be sloppy on them.
Old white letter tire I had/have After grinding a ways to show the white you can see the seam that would knock that tire out of consideration for a wide white.

Re: What whitewall tires are you using?
It is Nick's tire shop. He uses a machine with an articulating arm on it. He does not sand it off like the youtube guy. His machine has a grinder like a Roto-Zip and actually cuts just the black off. It leaves a perfect groove. The tires in my pic were cut. He says the "Arizonion" tires have the biggest white area if you can find them. I just got cheap Discount Tire brand for mine.

Man those look really good to be shaved!! How wide is the white on that one??
And I'd really like to find a shop in N.C that can do this! Any fellow N. Carolinians ever have this done anywhere??
