Talking Re: What's wrong with long beds?

When I started looking for my truck I had two rules: Had to be 60-63 (windshield ain't supposed to be flat), and it had to be long. Short ones ride rough, and you can't haul as much. And really, when has being too long really been a problem.......

Re: What's wrong with long beds?

It depends what your intent is...If you want a hotrod then a shortbed looks bad ass, but I grew up with the understanding a truck was for working and if you are in construction a long bed is a must for lumber...It is a total waste for a bed if your 8ft products have to sit up on the tailgate..A full sized sheet of plywood will lay flat door closed in a long bed.

Re: What's wrong with long beds?

I love the long beds as well. I think they have way better proportions, especially when lowered.

Re: What's wrong with long beds?

The more I think about it the more I like the looks of LWB, but prefer the sensibility of a SWB as a toy over here in the UK.

Does anyone have a Head to head photo of either two Fleetsides or two Stepsides in LWB vs SWB flavour to post on here, so we can compare Apples with Oranges .

Not quite the same , but I am sure you get the picture .

Exactly! When I was in high school (back when these things were new), it was short bed or nothing. When my grandfather passed away, he had a long bed fleet GMC. I would have loved to have that truck, if it wasn't a long bed.

Fast forward 40 some years and I had a chance to pick up a LWB Fleetside. I looked into shorting it, both as a 6 footer and 7 footer. The 7 footer looks awesome in the cut and paste photos I put together, but I never pulled the trigger on it.

I've been driving and modifying it for eight years now and the long bed has grown on me. The short beds just look stumpy to me.

I like what Mechanic77 did. He cut one foot out from behind the cab and made the frount of the bed same as the back, Its a Med. bed of 7 foot long. I like the proportions better. I look for Balance when looking at a car or truck. Proportion from to back
Same as my profile photo............
I looked for the thread your talking about and had no luck finding it.

I love it lol. I'm not really a short person unless it's a stepside, but would rather it be a LWB stepside. Of course at the same time I love me dad's K5, he's had that thing since I was a kid, he's also got a '76 SWB that he's had longer than the K5 and I want it too. I guess I just like the idea of being able to have a tool box and a quad in the bed and still bieng able to close the tailgate.

That shot of Dino's trucks is the way I like these trucks. I like the lowered shortbeds and the raised longbeds. A shortbed that is raised just looks too short to me and a lowered longbed looks too long.

Re: What's wrong with long beds?

IMO long beds are like four doors. Short beds look better and are worth more. Take a 57 Bel Air 2 door that needs a resto and a four door that someone has put a ton of money into. The rusted hulk will sell for more every time. It's the same for me with a short bed. Just my taste.

Re: What's wrong with long beds?

to me long beds are like 4 door cars. long ago you would never drive a 4 door car because it was probably your dads car.i have always had long bed trucks because of my work . but now with the old trucks i like and have a short fleet. but now you can have a 4 door old car or a long bed truck and it's okay. i would have a long bed truck if it had a big window and was lowered.

I've had both but IMO, long bed fleet "laying out" is eye candy! Too see them cruising low looks like a stretched out limo.

+1 for the long and low. Granted I like them all except long steppers. Something about them just isn't right.

Re: What's wrong with long beds?

Comparing a longbed to a 4 door car??? C'mon. And saying a longbox is too hard to park? Sounds like a woman talking, do you buy a vehicle because it is easy to park? How about how it drives and rides? A longbox rides like a car, and looks cool when lowered. A shortbox in my humble opinion, looks out of proportion with the cab and fenders. The ride is compromised also, if you have ever ridden in each. I also prefer a small back window, just my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love em all, but most think it has to be a shortbox to be cool. We aren't all built the same. Have a long look at a lowered longbox.

Re: What's wrong with long beds?

I have too much crap for a short bed. I can fit my quad, my dirt bike, and my daughters quad with gear bags in the bed with the tail gate shut. Can't do that with a short bed.

Re: What's wrong with long beds?

Ive alway been a long box guy, growing up on the farm all weve ever had is long boxes, same with all the neaighbors, people who use there pickup for work have long boxes, people who use them like a car have short boxes, theres just something impressive and sexy about these 60-66 long box fleetside, short boxes just look goffy in my opionion your box has to be longer than the cab!

Re: What's wrong with long beds?

Long Bed fan here, although I had a Short Bed Stepside once and liked it.

I like Short Chassis in 1-Ton trucks (w/DRW). As far as parking goes, I've never had any problems with my Short 1-Tons and, of course, no problems with my Long Bed Pick-ups, as long as the lots weren't designed for mini-vehicles.

I think it was kind of cool that GM offered both.
