It's a single stage acrylic chassis paint that my local paint supplier stocks. Seems to be holding up pretty well. I have drilled quite a few holes in the frame for air and fuel lines since painting without it chipping so adhesion seems to be good. I primed everything with a SEM etching primer.

Wheels are 15" steelies from a mid-90's chevrolet pickup. Painted same white as the top of the cab. I'll be running the original '69 full wheel covers.

I wasn't completely sure about the rear tire size, but had some 235/70/15's that I decided I could run initially. I think a 235/65/15 would be ideal. So, I had mismatching make/model of tires front to rear and this drives me nuts so I shaved the lettering off with a DA.

At this point, I put the engine/trans in and the cab on so I could build the exhaust.


The exhaust is all 2.25" mild steel tubing from Columbia Mandrel. I don't have any pics of the complete exhaust, but it consists of flowmaster mufflers, stainless v-band clamps, and stainless flex joints. I then painted it with a satin black exhaust paint.

Exterior is original except for the white on the roof, someone had put an antenna through the center of the roof so I had to weld up the hole and shoot the roof. I'll probably hit it with a red scuff pad to knock down the gloss of the new paint though. It was probably more work keeping the old paint on the back of the cab then it would have been to shoot the whole thing..

To wrap up the chassis, I ran all of the stainless brake lines from Inline Tube and Aeroquip Starlite AN hose for fuel. Also, ran all of the 3/8 air line for the air ride. To secure the fuel and air line I used a product that a local machinist produces called quick clips, pretty nice product.

I then started to body work the cab and prepping for paint.


The entire cab will be painted except for the outer back wall. Once the cab is assembled, the only new paint that can be seen will be the roof and the rockers which I'll scuff up to knock down the gloss.

Really cool build. I have to tell you that firewall work brought back memories in my Jezebel build. I wish I could have found replacements for mine... Good work!

Those are a good size for these trucks, I run 235/75R15's on mine.

Love the work so far. It's amazing to me how nice the truck is, and then the cowl is worse than one on a rusted out northeast truck. Go figure. Great work on saving it. I also love your "paint" (reado the inside and leave the outside alone) idea. It's a shop truck... any door logos in mind, or no?

Thanks! Didn't plan any logo's on the doors. Might do something small on the lower corner of the tailgate or bumper, nothing too big though.

When shooting the inside of the cab, the cab was set on its back for most of the time. The inner roof, backwall, and floors were shot first. Then the cab was set back up and the dash/underdash was shot. I figured there would be to much overspray trying to shoot all of it at once and minimize the risk of bumping into wet paint while trying to paint the inside of a cube. Once the inside of the cab was done, it was taped off and the firewall, cowl, jambs, and rockers were shot. For some reason I didn't take any in-progress pics of the exterior of the cab, but below are some of the interior.

Truck is almost done, but just now decided to do a build thread. I hope everyone is okay with the "accelerated" build thread. This is a list of the big things left to do:

Pull old bed wood out/ put bed on
Build fuel filler behind drivers side rear marker lens
Install headlights/grill/hood/front and rear bumpers
Install door rubbers/door panels/seat/front and rear glass/cab divider molding
Build upper shock mounts for front/Install front and rear shocks
Install AC pressure lines/charge AC

I hope to have all of this wrapped up in the next month, but with a new baby this may be challenging. Plan is to have it at the Ft. Worth Goodguys show in March, but I'll also be trying to wrap up a '60 Belair 2dr Hrdtop for the Lonestar Roundup in Austin in April. Going to be pretty busy..

Actually, before I painted the cab I had the bottom of the cab sprayed with bed liner. Next time, I'll do this after paint. It was just more work trying to keep it masked off during paint.
