Re: have these been seen before?(old Service Stations)

Thirty years ago, we still had full serve pumps here. I worked at the local SHELL station/carwash. It was not a "service station", that was further in town. When I started there, it did have 4 out of 6 islands as full serve. It later switched to 4 being self serve before going all self serve sometime after I was gone.
It's completely gone now, torn down over a year ago. I guess something new will get built there eventually, it's a good spot.

Re: have these been seen before?(old Service Stations)

Oh yeah-I dig that picture of the station in Nebraska (?) with their gasahol way back then. I guess it didn't really catch on back then, either.

About the first thing I remember about gasoline was my mom loading us all up in the car and her driving clear across town where the competing stations were having a gas war and the lowest price was 25.9, and there were cars lined up!

Besides dad's pick-ups, the first car I remember was when mom got a used '62 Caddy (no way they could have bought a new Caddy) I'm sure I remember going to the gas war station in it because I'm also sure mom had to do it alot with that car

Ah, the "gas wars".......I remember seeing 18.9 cents in Hartford CT! that was probably around 1960 or 61. My mother had inherited a gigantic Nash from her uncle, probably about a 46 or 47. You could hold a dance in the back seat!

Re: have these been seen before?(old Service Stations)

This is a photo of a original gas war prize you would get when purchasing gas at a 76 Station back in the 60ies..

I have also a set of bronze coins with the Presidents photo of them up until that time from the Shell station .. You would get a alumium coin ever time you got gas or filled up (cant remember for sure which or both) and ever so often you could win a bronze coin that would enable you to get the whole bronze set which I have ..

this is a prize that you could fit down on top of your antenna ,,

Re: have these been seen before?(old Service Stations)

Anyone here who has worked in a service station remember having to clean the mud-pit in the wash room when it got full?
Always hated that job.
Best way I found was wait until about quiting time. Take off shoes and socks, jump in, shovel the wheelbar full, and haul it out.
Regardless how you did it, plan on getting soaking wet and muddy.
Now, they probably have a vacuum truck come, suck it out, and never get dirty.

Wow-I haven't seen a 76 ball in quite some timeI was too young to have a car when they were out in SoCal and then when we moved to Utah, no 76 stations. They all used to have give-aways of some kind, though, even if it was just Blue Chip or Green Stamps

Re: have these been seen before?(old Service Stations)

we still have a sinclair station that's full serve here in Oklahoma. Great people running it too. The charge is about 25c / gallon more but it's worth it to sit and chat with the old timers while they're cleaning the windows and stuff.

The old lady that works there even gave me a handsewn bag holder for the wife's kitchen.

that's all i have right now, maybe some one else has some more, i like them, back to the good old days....the lowest price i ever had was a gas war in Dallas , and i bought gas for 15 cents a gallon, may have been 15.9 cents at that time most gas was 32 to 35 cents.

I brought about 1/2 of my hot wheels and a race track from my parents house for my kids to play with. They get excited when Daddy brings out "the race cars"! haha

The first pic of The Bomber gas station I recognized right away, been there forever and still is in Milwaukie, Oregon.

Story was the guy flew it there but had never flown before. So I just went to see if I could verify that and it's even funnier than that - http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2968
