Re: Let's see your 67-72 Rat Rods...

Rat rod 67-72? No,but how about a rat truck? Anything can be a rat something, but only what could be a hot rod can be a rat rod. It all began with rat bikes. As far as what many call rats these days are what we would call "builders" or "projects" or "works in progress". Rat rods are specific creations and even a flat black true hot rod (as in pre-war) built on budget doesn't qualify. My poor boy '67 is looking more and more like it's going together in primer, due to paint and body work just not in the budget...time or money. That's where bombers come from...desire outweighs budget. Ya do what ya can and hope it can improve.

Here's my 28 Av8 rpu traditional rod project and my 67 c10 that has some patina and a nice drivetrain.
I don't think either qualifies as a rat rod.

^^That's cool, Brad.
Here's mine, I thought it would be considered "ratty" till I got some education. Runs and stops like a new one, but needs paint!

Interesting. The nomenclature of this stuff doesn't seem to be fully evolved yet. And, of course, everyone gets to call his own stuff whatever he or she wants.
I'd agree that a rod's a rod. For my money, something black chopped, minimalist, and could be rough or not, may or may not qualify as a "Rat Rod".

I don't know about a 2007 Escalade that's been beat to crap, lowered, shoe'd with 24's, and then painted with a spray can. But old trucks ...like the 20's and 30's vintage that
are sometimes only shells for their patina? With wide whites, no tops, and a flathead in 'em? They would seem to be up there in the Rat Rod arena.

My truck, being frame-off and wrenched together without my using any sense for my wallet at every nut, bolt, and nice part....suspension to wiring to interior to glass, etc.?
Ran out of gas (money) at the paint stage.

So, she's getting satin black finish from my own gun when I can do it. Then, I'm calling her good. Drives and rides like a queen, but adding another $10,000 to make
her worth another $3,000 (finally) makes no sense to me.

I call her "RAT". Not "Rat Rod"...But "Rat".

Re: Let's see your 67-72 Rat Rods...

Yeah, rat truck. Not that I'd call 'er a rat. Just needs paint . I was just looking at Hot Rod Flatz and the jury is in on this stalled project. You see,I have stripped all my OEM metal to bare, then primed with TSC Red Oxide...no body work what so ever. The truck is being built with all good sheet metal I had gathered over time for the many projects I had...all rolled into one (thanks to a divorce). I've been waiting to go together because of money/time for a nice body and paint. Screw it,I decided this truck gets Hot Rod Flatz Red Oxide. It's paint, man, not primer. I won't be dumb to go ahead. If money comes along I have something good (urethane) to go onto. But honestly,I'm good with the rough n tumble thing if that's how it has to be. I really prefer the DILLIGAF vibe anyway. Not competin' with money any more. Been there done that...y'all have fun with it
But....don't call it a rat rod lest ye be ready to hear it! Runs good, needs paint. That's the ticket. Been goin' on since cats started buildin'

Re: Let's see your 67-72 Rat Rods...

I gotta go with special-K on this one. I don't have anything against a truck with a $8-10k paint job, but I hate to spend that much on paint. My favorite is original paint paint that reflects the life of the truck. If its been outside in the desert sun all its life, cool. if it's had several coats of wax a year, and never been rained on , that's cool. I wuld love it if my truck was original color, but someone painted it a hideous purple in a paint that they should use for armored vehicles, and flat black Rustoleum was easy for a novice painter to apply. I like the Hot Rod Flatz colors, and will probably eventually use one. I would rather have a truck with money spent under the hood and between the tires.

hotrod100 first off, nice truck!

Can you share your wheel/tire combo, I was wondering if those were 16.5 8 lugs?

and is that a 4/6 drop?

Thanks

Re: Let's see your 67-72 Rat Rods...

This is technically a "rat rod"... rattle can and dinged up trucks would be better named as "shop trucks" or something... Our trucks are too new to be rat rods and you need to use parts from many different vehicles etc.

right, that is a true rat rod. I won't use the word rat infront of any of my projects no mater how ruff they are, more like steetrods, hot rods, crusiers, shop truck, beater, junk etc...

The latest term for these is "clown rod" see the skull and all of the effort put into making the car ratty. Its just silly.
Someone at greaserama called my boat a rat boat, I had a hard time not punching him. A few paint chips and apparently its cool to call someones stuff ratty

Re: Let's see your 67-72 Rat Rods...

Of course your boat is not ratty. Looks great.
The term ratrod is used very loosely. Many who use it have no clue. To them it may be anything somewhat old with some skins and scrapes and intentionally putting on mismatched parts to attain an outrageous look much like the monstrosity above. Others take a 90 up vehicle and call it their rat rod. Others take a good looking vehicle and try making it rough in hopes of falling into the rat rod catagory.
The term rat rod is obviously a matter of personal interpretation. Eh, the fad will fade with time and people will go back to making them shine, for the most part.
I appreciate a good "barn find" or "survivor" or "driver" myself. Fresh paint and interior look great but it's originality is lost. A popular phrase these days is "it's only original once".
Whoops, sorry for the commentary.

Re: Let's see your 67-72 Rat Rods...

A kid was angry about not getting into greaserama with his 74 chevy rat rod. 74 is too new for their show (not saying they don't make exceptions, they did for me). He just had a crappy old farm truck with no mufflers and a rattle can paint job. My miata is a dented up pos, I don't call it a rat rod its just a pos. Aw man we are getting way off topic this guy just wants pics of old trucks. Can somebody, anybody save this thread?

I always thought a rat rod was something older that was put together with this and that. Usually on a low budget, this is one a good friend of mine built.
