Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

I have a 10 pound extinguisher on my welding truck along with a 2.5 gallon pressurized water extinguisher. I keep a 2.5 pounder in the pickup and suburban too.

This was the suggested location for the GM accessory extinguisher, and where most trucks had them. I mounted one on the roll bar of my Blazer. In trucks with utility beds they get mounted inside the first door behind the cab on driver side. I've mounted on the hump but it gets in the way. I always carry one

I carry a Halon or Halotron fire extinguisher in my truck. After cleaning up the mess from normal fire extinguishers I decided to go with this kind since it leaves no residue.

If you've ever had to clean up a dry chemical extinguisher mess, you'll want to get a clean agent extinguisher. Usually the best place to purchase these are from an industrial safety supply house.

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

Discharge time for halotron is about 10 seconds for bottles 10lbs and under (per Amerex). Dry chemical extinguishers have longer duration the bigger they are (~10 seconds for 2.5lb to ~20 seconds for 10lb). And a 2.5lb halotron bottle is typically only 1/5 the rating for fuel fires as a 2.5lb dry chemical bottle. A 10lb halotron bottle has the same UL(C) rating as a 2.5lb dry chemical bottle. So keep in mind that small halotron extinguisher won't put out any sizable fire, but it will prevent possible damage from the dry chemical itself. You'd probably be able to reliably put out a fire about 12" round x 15" high with that depending on how it's being fed.
You need to periodically shake the extinguishers, especially the powder type. Over time, the powder will compact in the bottom of the extinguisher and if you go to use it, you will get little more than a "pfft" as it clogs. You should be able to hear and feel the powder slide around in the extinguisher as you tip it back and forth. The motion/bouncing/etc of driving makes this problem worse.

I have one in all my vehicles. In the C10 I made a custom glove box that allows a small Kidde.

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

Also, keep in mind that fire extenguishers need to be inspected regularly. They do have an expiration date but many can be recharged. Most companies have them in their offices and plants as part of their fire safety program.Insurance companies and the fire marshall require yearly inspection. So if you're carrying one check it and if you're buying one check to see what the shelf life is.

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

Mine was on the driver side on the buddy seat frame on my 67. i am assuming this was put on by the dealer. I have a original recharge kit for it as well but am unsure if i will charge it. may be too old. I Might hide another one somewhere in the truck that is newer and probably better.

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

Right now mine is rolling around the passenger side floor. I've been trying to come up with a good place to put it that won't be in the way, but I just haven't thought of one yet. I like the idea of tucking it in the cubby by the passenger seat, but in an emergency that would take a while to get to...

Wonder if a bracket under the glovebox would work? I don't have AC...

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

Good point about the difference in fire suppression on similar size extinguishers. Below are examples of Ansul 2.5lb stored pressure extinguishers. The clean agent has a 2-B:C rating meaning, a novice should be able to put out a 2 foot square fire. The other is a dry chemical extinguisher about the same size that will put out a 10 foot square fire in the hands of a novice. With training you should be able to at least double this number.

I sold safety/fire equipment for about 25 years and was trained at the Ansul training school in Wisconsin. The thing to remember when putting out an engine fire is too bump the extinguisher and not just open it up and dump it. Engines can be very hot and have a tendency to re-ignite fuel. By bumping it you are buying time to hopefully let the engine/exhaust cool below ignition temp.

Also, don't buy cheap. You really do get what you pay for with these extinguishers if you know what you're looking for. For example many of these extinguishers have plastic heads. Look for metal heads, also a short nozzle hose is a good thing, it gives you more control.

Lastly, the cost difference between the two listed below are about $150 at retail. $195 vs $50.

But do you really want to shoot dry chemical down your shiny new carb? Not me. After you shoot a clean agent, it's simply gone. No clean up.

Item #: 09626
2.5 lb FE-36 CleanGuard Fire Extinguisher w/ Vehicle Bracket
2-B:C rating

Item #: 09601
2.5 lb Ansul Sentry Foray ABC Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher w/ vehicle bracket
1-A:10-B:C rating

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

I'm bumping this thread.

I want to get me a Halon 1211 and not the DryChem. The thought of getting that stuff into crevices would make me loose sleep.

Would Halon be effective in a bad scenario and how much (Extinguisher size) would one need? 2.5lb is a nice size space-wise, but effective?

Has anyone here actually used a Halon 1211 Extinguisher on an engine/vehicle fire before?

Re: Do you run a fire extinguisher in your truck?

Had one mounted to the heater box, used small screws. Looked great and was out of the way. You could also wrap one up (in cloth etc) and place in the passenger side corner behind the seat where the jack goes. Get a C02 one as dry chem will wreck your engine if you have a fire and it gets into the carb.

I pack one in my glove box. It probably should be more accessible. I like the idea of the ps kick panel that somebody here showed.

Mine in the 72 K1500 is uncharged - that probably makes 30 years or so in a row now. Time for a new one - it would be great if I could reuse the existing one.

Probably just as cheap to replace it as it would to recharge it.

FYI, for those of you looking for quality hand held extinguishers, Ansul & General are probably two of the better brands. I personally prefer Ansul. Also, you should look at Safety Supply distributors for the better equipment and pricing.

I'm out of the business but would be happy to recommend some national companies if you drop me a PM.

I'll have to check what type this one is. It's pretty new.

And, every once-and-a-while, I pull it off of the floor and out of the bracket for "quick draw" practice.
