Re: Woodgrain door panels
Here is a picture of my original panel up against my LMC panel. Aside from the obvious color difference, the new panel is plastic and does not have the pinstripe around the perimeter.
There is no texture on either panel. The original door panel is close in color to the dash pieces, but still a little lighter. 40 years of sun may have a little to do with that! |

Re: Woodgrain door panels
I don't know for sure. I would imagine you could drill the holes, but I've never compared the reproduction panels to the originals.
You would still need the stainless trim that surrounds the woodgrain. |

Re: Woodgrain door panels
I think it's worth a shot!
You could also buy used ones and paint them to the right color. Mine have been repainted to match Parchment Color. |

Re: Woodgrain door panels
Andy, are talking about buying LMC's '72 door panels? The stainless trim does not work on those. Their panels are not reproductions, they are replacements. Very similar but not duplicates.

Re: Woodgrain door panels
I took these pictures today a Classic Parts in Kansas City. I compared their reproduction woodgrain door panel inserts with one of the originals from my truck as well as an original Super Cheyenne Dash bezel.
The color is much closer to the original color than the LMC panels. They also feature the "pinstripe" around the perimeter of the panel. These aluminum panels are manufactured by Counterpart. These panels are also made of aluminum like the originals, the LMC panels are plastic. Just remember, the original panels have 40 years of age on them. I will be switching out my LMC panels (retail $119.95) for the Aluminum panels that retail for $219.00. |

Re: Woodgrain door panels
No plastic panels for me! I called Wes with Classic Heartbeat and he assured me that the wood panel inserts made from aluminum would be a good match. I bought them and he shipped them to Tennessee, where my truck is being restored. Joel received them and said they looked OEM to him, dead on the money. If you want more information, you'll have to call Wes. When I get to Tennessee, I'll post pictures of these panels. -Casey

Casey, I had those new aluminum door panels made by counterparts. The panels just look chalky, they don't have a sheen to them and are noticeably lighter. But they are the best option on the market. Special-k has a set of door inserts that are from the looks exact replicas.

Re: Woodgrain door panels
A little lacquer will give them a nice sheen! Of course, they will probably yellow over time as well.
Given what's available, the aluminum panels are the best out there. The plastic ones I bought from LMC were all that I was aware of at the time. They look....plastic! Now I know better and will replace them when I get a few extra bucks. |
