I get 12 with my 454! and my drive to work truck is a 460 BBF. it gets 12-14!

i am using a 12v cummins in my new DD K20. it should get 20+. that way mosesburb isnt the only cool guy around....

but i would still love an 8.1 in the jeep. i think it would be just about perfect with my gearing and NV4500. ill just tow it with the K20 so i can have the best of both!

i just need to see if i can measure 370 mm from the crank CL to the heaterbox on my jeep with my imperial tape....

looks like a little extra height might be a deal breaker. but i have a nice big hammer, so i can make it work...

True, sort of…. Edelbrock probably uses the same supplier base (mainy Delphi) or at least Chinese equivalents, for injectors and sensors as GM. The Edelbrock ECM is not an automotive production piece and I very seriously doubt Edelbrock has millions of test miles and hours into durability testing their ECMs. ProFlo is probably a decent piece for running around town but I wouldn’t rely on Edelbrock, Holley, MSD or any of the aftermarket electronic modules for travels out in the boonies.

You know, I had a 2005 Silverado HD with a 6.0L and it got the same mileage as the 8.1L. In fact, the 6.0L got worse mileage when it had a trailer behind it. Not sure what kind of mileage you expect you are going to get out of your project regardless what engine you use. If fuel mileage is a big concern for you, you picked a horrible hobby to be in my friend

I never realized that the L18 had cathedral port heads. Those things look like they can move some air! Did they do anything to the shape of the chambers? IIRC the L29 used some kind of "fast burn" or heart shape chamber and I've heard mixed results about it. How do the L18 heads stack up to previous head designs?

not starting a war or who's better, but my pro-flo has been on my 454 since '96 with zero problems & my crew lives in the bush more than the pavement. edelbrock durability has been a non issue with me. stock or aftermarket, take care of your stuff & it will take care of you

My '04 was a 6.0l truck. in the high elevation with no real big hills, i saw 18.8 MPG once and commonly saw 17.5-18 unloaded. i was realy happy with that. put a trailer on it, and i was lucky to see 12. it has a nice Blackbear tune in it. before the tune it was a 13MPG truck. for the amount of time i towed/hauled with it, it was the perfect engine after the tune. if i keep my other K20 i am really considering a 6.0 for it. also considering a Dmax or a CR 5.9... i love big blocks, but i am tired of using them as commuters.

All good input. I'm completely confident in my Pro-flo (I have run it for years on a street car).

It's still depends on what ones needs/desires are for thier situation. I'd love an 8.1 in a different application. Maybe a rock crawler is in my future?

6.0L getting over 14mpg would be something mine got 11/12 NEVER would EVER get 17/18 thats to funny, my 5.3 wont do that unless i baby it.

I've never seen a motor that dirty unless it was used for mudding and then you know its been abused for me it goes diesel for towing, small block for everything else lol but it has to be a 24v as well

The right tires, tune and an easy foot and speed less than 65mph. elevation has a lot to do with it. i was in the san luis valley when i got that. ~7500ft. i was on my way to SoDak, and as soon as i dropped out of the elevation and got into west kansas, possibly the flattest part of the world, i was back at 14-16 depending on the road i was on. it was also early spring, but after the winter fuel.

I can’t remember what the combustion chambers looked like although I don’t recall them looking much different than the L29 Vortec heads. No mention of the combustion chamber design in the application manual.

Cool! Glad you have had good luck. A buddy of mine here that builds street rods for people all over the country and has not enjoyed the same good fortune with Edelbrock, Megasquirt nor Holley EFI kits. The last couple years he has only been using older Ford 5.0L engines, GM Tune Port intakes on crate engines, RamJets and LS engines.

You win the 6.0L fuel mileage award. My 6.0L would never come near that unless it was dropped out the back of a B52 bomber at 30,000 ft nor will the 5.3Ls in the past 3 Tahoes we’ve owned. That Blackbear tune could be helping though. A tuned engine will have more power with potential MPG gains although they may not pass emissions.
