Re: ever get to the point..

I have been nickel and dimeing it sense Dec! My 78 started the white smoke if death early December so it took me a few months to get those on. Then I thought well who wants a stock intake and then a new carb then the head blew! So for the last to months mine has been getting all new parts and I'm hoping that I can get it running this week. Every day I work on it I stop at least once and throw a wrench! I don't know how much more my tools can take it! I feel your pain though, but they are just so much fun when they run.....well!

Re: ever get to the point..

Got to that point last weekend. I know it's probably not a popular opinion, but sometimes they're just too much work/money. I bought a rusted out POS because I got it cheap, I was ok with the body work, but then the carb went, then the radiator, then the motor. Finally my wife asked me if I was planning to spend $10000 to turn a $200 truck into a $3000 truck. I don't know, it just killed it for me. So I let the beater be a beater and sold it to someone who wanted a beater, and bought a nice clean 85 square so that the work I put into it is fun, not endless torture. Maybe I should stop buying $200 beaters....nah, never happen.

Re: ever get to the point..

Its either parts or payments...

I went from a white silverado 85k5 4x4

to a white 2001 silverado extended cab 4x4

to a white 1990 gmc suburban 4x4

to a white 2007 gmc crew d-max 4x4

to a white 1988 silverado crew 4x4...now in a thousand pcs..

my daily driver is white 2006 silverado w/t 2wd

also had other 71-72 pick ups , blazers, and a suburban b4 this back and forth trend of NEW then OLD..

looking back i only miss the square ones...and maybe the 71-72's.......

Re: ever get to the point..

It gets frustrating for me since the weather is still too cold to be outside working on my projects. My K5 Blazer is in storage that needs to be finished and the c-10 shorty I bought and have tinkered with until the other one gets completed. It helps me to plan things out on paper at least so I'm keeping the juices flowing and being more prepared for when the time comes to work on them again. I had my K5 sit for over 10 years and even had a for sale sign on it a while back but then decided I liked it too much and it was time to focus on getting it done. I bought a welder and went at it. I've learned so much along the way and found a passion that I thought I had before but really didn't...... I love my vehicles! Once you get out and just start..... that helps alot. Find people to help if you don't know, learn as you go but keep positive and things will get done. It's so nice now as the to do list on the Blazer is getting smaller and smaller as it come close to completion. Hang in there and good luck to you.

Re: ever get to the point..

Same issue all over....

Started swapping the drivetrain in my CC dually (the motor seized) mid-year 2011. Texas summer.... working outside w/zero shade... made working on it not very fun @ all. Once the fall rolled around, a big project @ work consumed all my time. Then it was x-mas & the cold weather (again... outside w/no shelter) so I was limited by daylight, free-time, & 'good' weather. By spring work was easing up so I thought I'd start making good progress only to get 'voted off my island' by my significant other.

I had to relocate & start all over trying to find things (the move occurred w/the truck 1/2 way disassembled). Once I got things in semi order, I just didn't want to mess w/it. So I didn't....

I work on it when I want to keep the frustrations to a minimum. It's nearing completion now on the drivetrain swap (re-did 1 or 2 things ) & then I have to start the rear lowering (did the front while the motor was out of the way).

Keep @ it but don't let it run (ruin) your life in the interim!

Re: ever get to the point..

I am at that point myself. Two projects and two grown up cars in my life. Wife wants me to choose.

I bought a Porsche 944 turbo two years ago and nursed it through some tough times. Aside from a cosmetically challenged interior, it is pretty nice. And fast. Normally it stays in the garage until I can't resist stretching its legs a bit. Having a drivers license and staying out of jail is very important at this stage of my life (nearly 50). This was the car I lusted after and couldn't afford in college (naturally). Not cheap to live with 27 years later either.

I found my '87 GMC stepper last Summer and snatched up this clean, refrigerator white ex- city maintenance truck for $1500. No options besides power steering. I put a great sounding exhaust on the little 4.3 TBI and happily cruise to work at 60-70 mph. Stress free. Great change from my grown up Jetta tdi wagon.

My wife has a valid point in that my progress on either project is slower than usual. Selling the 944 would free up time and $ for paint and an engine swap. Selling the stepper would free up driveway space and enough to revamp the 944 interior. Great until the next $500 Porsche part breaks.

Really leaning towards keeping the GMC, because if nothing else it reminds me of simpler times and is low maintenance. Porsche reminds me to be careful what you wish for. Anybody else go through this?

Re: ever get to the point..

It happens old things break things dont go right its part of life. I drive mine daily so i need it to run or either take the wife to work and then pick her up or freeze on the bike granted the cold dont bug me to much but ice and motorcycles dont mix. There are times when I wish i had a newer truck but then I press the gas and all those feelings melt away.

Re: ever get to the point..

vbjunker.....its unfortunate to have to make these kind of decisions .....such torment of the mind......maybe take the porsche for one last long cruise then use the money to make the truck go fast......keepin life simple...

Thumbs up Re: ever get to the point..

Anti-gov: ha! Thanks for the nudge. No silver spoon here. Always watching for niche vehicles from my past. I'll trade sweat and time for something special. I've had good luck with my projects in the past, usually knowing when to move on. The exception was the big Bronco with a lightning engine and 35" tires and ram air. Good money after bad with that beast but it made perfect sense at the time. This time I feel like I am at the tipping point with the Porsche. It is a lot easier to find an unloved Porsche 944 than a clean Stepside. I'd drive the GMC cross country tomorrow (with my tool bag behind the seat). And I could find repair parts in every town in America if I needed.
Got to admit i like the characters on this website. Who could give this up?

Re: ever get to the point..

I absolutely and totally HATE my truck several days a year!!

But that also leaves three hundred and fifty that I love it. That's a balance I can live with.

These feelings are for many owners, you are not alone.
