Re: CO is a rip off...

To the Op did you buy collector plates? My Blazer was close to what you paid but I bought collector plates so they are good for five years.

We do have an antique registration, they call it "historical". Anything over 25 years qualifies, but there are restrictions. They are fairly easy going about them if you don't abuse it.
Simple one-time registration that lasts as long as you own it. Liscense plates do not go with the vehicle when it is sold, like some states
Agreed...that's the route I went

Re: CO is a rip off...

Hmmm... my "Big Orange" has "housecar" plates, instead of commercial. They are blue and yellow. I'd much prefer the old black and yellow plates that it had had before they got changed. Registration isn't all that expensive, even so. Something like $60 a year.

But these plates are technically treated like historic vehicle plates and have limited use. To use as an everyday driver you need to have the regular plates and that jumps it up a bunch in Michigan. (my exact figures are in the truck in the pole barn)

It's worth doing what you did or even buying a cheap cap to stick on temporarily - it will pay for itself in about 5-10 years...

In Mo. we pay sales tax on all vehicle purchases, new or used, dealer or individual and the state is nice enough to give us the opportunity to pay "personal property" tax on all vehicles yearly based on its current value. Licensing isnt bad though, somewhere around $25. a year

Re: CO is a rip off...

Hey Elks I just bought the collector plates which are good for 5 years. It was 229 for my 67 which equals out about 3 years worth of registration. If you buy the collector plates you get 5 years of registration for the cost of three. They stick it to you on the road and bridge tax which is around 45 bucks a year but with the collector plates you only pay once for 5 years instead of every year. Saved me about 150.

Re: CO is a rip off...

Just double checked, $125 for plates, registration & new state appropriate title (relocated from NV to CA) but the temp registration does say commercial, really? I did have to take my truck to a weigh station before registering it which I thought was weird...

Also not too sure I am actually getting plates for that amount since its been three weeks and nothing in the mail, no new title, no permanent registration, no plates! it was on 3/15 and they gave me a red window sticker that has the number 5 on it so I am assuming it could be until the end of May before I see anything?

Re: CO is a rip off...

I think my green '68 was-oddly enough-$68 last year. Plus, of course, the 20 bones for an inspection, but that's kind of a separate thing.

All this reminds me-I'm due at the end of the month.

Yeah, Missouri also has a mandatory annual vehicle inspection. i have lived in Colorado, North Carolina, and worked just over the state line in South Carolina............none of those have an annual inspection and have some of the highest "Highway Use Taxes" you will see. They also have more junk heaps driving the roads. I paid $25 to license, register, and title mine here in Iowa.

Re: CO is a rip off...

I bought a 67 chevy truck back in 2010 and it was and still is a project but we got it running finally this year. All I had was a bill of sale with no title. Went to an auto registration service company and the lady helped me get plates and title. Cost me total $311. No regrets. I love my truck and I wont sell it. Someone had to save it and give it life again so money well spent.

Re: CO is a rip off...

In ND "Pioneer" plates are for vehicles 40 years or older. $19 one time registration. Not supposed to be used in routine functions of a business or farming operation. Never seen that actually enforced though.

Also, as long as you have a title it doesn't need to be inspected. But all that does is make sure your lights work/has seatbelts. Stuff like that.

Oh well, I just call these things STUPID TAX, and then drive on.
Here's a good one. I bought a '60 Apache in '86, had to pay sales tax. I moved to Texas in 87. Moved back to California in 91 and got nailed with sales tax again! I even had the original paperwork. They didn't care; "if you want to register it, you have to pay."!!!

Re: CO is a rip off...

I just transferred the title and registered a 72 c10 as an antique with year of manufacture ates and they based tax on purchase price of $500. Tags (limited to parade, ocassional use, etc) are good for 5 yrs and were $52. Tax and transfer was around $100. No annual safety inspection for antiques and full coverage antique insurance is around $200/ yr for agreed value of $20k.

Re: CO is a rip off...

Non antiques are another matter. Last year I bought a 2002 2500hd dura max for $7k but they charged tax based on a book value of $12k! It was over $600 to transfer title and buy farm tags.
