VERY DUSTY. I'm in the middle of doing this on my truck, and I'm glad I have a respirator, although a really good dust mask will work as well.

Well, I guess I understand it's gonna be dusty and I know something will need to be done to protect my lungs. But am I being paranoid that the dust is gonna settle on everything and stain rust on it?

Don't worry about the dust contaminating everything around you First, wood and plastics can't rust. Second, Metals, such as you car, are protected with paint so do not touch the "rust" and third, it's dry dust so you can remove is with some air very easily.
