Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

Daze~OK, how do I go about replacing them and where do I get them? right now i'm trying to figure out how to remove the broken bolt/pin that holds the pin in which holds the spider gears~ I didn't break it, there was a short bolt, I removed the short bolt that someone put in(it was 1/2"), then deep inside the hole I can see the remainder of another bolt).

Speedbumpauto~ thank you for telling me the ratio~ I was going to ask

Replacing the spider gears
(Trying) to remove a hardened broken bolt from a rearend?
Getting all the particles out and
Re-setting the lash properly when (I presume) you've never done it?

NOW is the time I'd be looking for a replacement. IF you do that, get your front and rear lug patterns in sync!

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

Dan, I dont' think this truck likes me!

Replacing the spider gears: I think I can do that, if I can get that broken bolt out.
The broken bolt? 35 bucks for the kit to remove it.
Getting the particles out? maybe 80%?
Adjusting the lash?

Crap! I'm back to square one!
*****
So, spider gears are probably going to cost at least 100 or so?
The kit to get that pin out? another 35.oo (if I can get it out)
Axle bearings suggested by Ogre? ching?
and the unknown?

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

i guess i just cant see the broken bolt you mentioned - i kind of figure if its that much trouble or you just dont want to bother with it - maybe another axle is the way to go - maybe thats a better alternative for you -just sayin is all

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

Daze, here's a picture. Deep inside the hole is the remainder of a bolt and the pin that holds the spider gears won't be able to come out without getting that broken off pin/bolt out. There's a kit online for about 35.oo that has good reviews. I'd have to look around to see what spider gears cost~ I guessed; don't have any idea what they cost or how to install. I haven't given up~ my husband wants me to continue with what I have.

Denee,
Try this trick, Get a pin punch or nail that will fit in the hole. If you use a nail cut the tip off so it has a flat surface on the end.

Drag the punch or nail in one direction across a strong speaker magnet several times, this will magnetize it .

Now insert it in the bolt hole and with a little luck and some WD-40 you may be able to extract the broken piece out. ( If you stars line up and your lucky horseshoe is open side up ) Good Luck !

That's just cruel man, giving her that kind of hope!

I'd guess the chances are like 99 to 1 against. Guess I'm being a Danny downer.

What would a new Ring Gear and pinion cost? Once that rust eats the hardening of the gears it won't take long for it to start howling!

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

I don't think it's a posi~

I tried to get the little left over bolt out~ I may or may not order the tool/extractor to get it out.
I contacted the transmission man which overhauled my transmission, I'm going to see what he can do for me. He overhauls rear axles too. Just exploring options.

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

I was told if you want to find out if it's a posi or not, jack it up so both wheels are off the ground, and spin one wheel. If the other spins the other way, it's a normal rear end. If it spins in the same direction, then you have a posi. If the axle is out of the truck, or your new drive shaft isn't in yet, have some hold the U-joint. Otherwise, a normal axle will look like a Posi.

I don't know if this will help or not, but I thought you guys might get a kick out of it.

Just a thought, Wonder if the carrier and pinion bearings are pitted like the gears? Might be worth a look.

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

Update:
My transmission man Kyle, he said he'll overhaul my axle for 400bucks which would include all bearings, all gears and setup, he asked me if I wanted posi, but I don't think that's absolutely necessary? I didn't ask how much though.
I'm thinking to let him do it. At least the axle would fit up without fabrication.

That sounds like a deal!
I'm afraid I don't remember what motor/trans you're running.
Either way, see how much the posi is. It may be worth it later on.
Here's why

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

John, that was a good video demonstration! My truck has a pretty 350 sbc with a TH350 transmission. I"ll ask how much more for a posi, but we'll probably just go with a regular non posi.

Update

Update: I took the axle to Kyle's place for him to evaluate the axle,( I was going to say my rear end, but I know where that would go! he said the ring gear looks to be salvageable, but the spider gears look in poor condition(75 for the set) As for the broken off pin, he said it can be easy or difficult. Another thing I asked was the possibility to drill holes in the axle flanges to be 4.5, and he said there's a machine shop nearby that can do that vs buying new axles @ 275 a pair. I pretty much gave him the go ahead and do whatever he sees necessary. I don't want to be taking this axle back out!! I really like Kyle, I forget how I found him, but when I had the tranny ready for him to pickup, he came over, put the transmission in his trunk, and delivered it back the next day!
I'll be taking my 67 Mustang to him to install a shift kit, I'd like to give him my business. Sorry for the long story!

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

I sent Kyle a text asking how much for the posi, since we may not be changing out the ring and pinion, but would I still want posi with 307 gears? But after seeing Mechanixmans vide on posi's~ looks like there is only one kind of posi to have, and that's probably very pricey!

Another thought, my front rotors are the smaller 5 x 4.5" with 7/16" studs, are rotors available in the larger size like my rear axle? The rear axle being 5 x 4 3/4", I think I'd like the larger pattern with the 1/2" studs? This way I could keep the rotors up front until I find out what kind of wheels/tires I'm going to buy.
dne' of course

an old picture~

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

Denee,
I may be wrong here but 5 x 4.5" is a Ford pattern, I believe.

5 x 4.75" is the Chevrolet car pattern. It is what I have all around on my '55.

5 x 5" is the Chevy truck pattern. If you go with 5 x 4.75" it will give you LOTS of wheel choices, like Rally wheels for example that otherwise do not fit on the truck pattern as they were never made for the trucks. My opinion coming: Whatever you do, pick ONE pattern and have it match front to back.

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

That was a promotional video from Eaton. So they're going to be a little biased. If you intend to lay down some rubber, or just want better traction in general, any (working) posi is worth it. A posi chunk from eaton tends to run about $500.
If kyle can offer you a cheaper one, it may be worth it.
But I may be wrong. Ask Kyle (or the other members) for a second opinion.

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

Dan, not so easy to find a rotor like I want. As for my measly searching, I found a rotor that meets what I'm looking for, but can't get the answer that it will fit my 59 spindle. I did talk to a man at NAPA, he was friendly, and he said bring a rotor in and let's see what we can do. Promising? I hate to order something like a rotor and it doesn't fit, then shipping is costly to get it back to whomsoever.
If worse comes to worse, then at least I have the option to match the rear to the front like Kyle suggested

Re: What do I do here~ rear axle?

Nick, Kyle mentioned "Eaton", but that's as far as the conversation went on it. I'm so wishy washy on stuff like this! I tell him I don't want it, then tell him I want it, like Dan said, my inner Blonde comes out now and then!
