here some images of the weird linkage. you can still see the welding wire sticking off it. It was stretched for some reason i guess.

Evidently they couldn't find the right linkage so they used a little American ingenuity...

We can see by your pic someone in the truck's past cobbled a shifter linkage together by cutting and welding the bracket at the trans end. He didn't have all the correct pieces so he made do with what he had. Some parts have been lost over the past 40 yrs.
Tim posted the correct pieces in that diagram to make it all work smoothly. They are available.
The main drawback to the straight aftermarket linkage is it doesn't manage engine torque effect with that straight setup. As the engine/tranny torques over it pushes the linkage upward. The OE linkage addresses engine /trans movement.
It is not a problem under normal driving conditions but with this aftermarket linkage you might see the shift lever in the cab move upward under hard acceleration or in offroading situations where the frame and cab twist a bit.
