Re: What year is my truck!?
I'm thinking it was wrecked at some point. Not sure why they kept the 76 vin on the cab but swapped in all of the 79 parts. They also took the time to transfer the '76 vin on the registration, but they still called it a 79 chevy instead of a 76 Jimmy. I just hope I can find the frame vin. If that's not '79 I'm going to be REALLY confused.

Re: What year is my truck!?
I know you are pretty sure it isn't a stolen truck. But if someone is ever unsure, you can check it for free here: https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud_awareness/vincheck
Had a '76 Chevy with the same problem. It was a military truck and the decal in the door was missing (likely peeled off after the truck was repainted for the 20th time). Luckily we found some original paperwork hidden in the truck which confirmed the vin (was military paperwork from its last posting) that we were given with it.

Re: What year is my truck!?
Thing is, in your case without an unmolested unaltered vinplate/tag you may have trouble proving your truck is NOT stolen.
The VIN is not suposed to be removed for any reason. That is why they use special rivets to fasten them to detect tampering. You could have a truck that is nothing more than a Title, registeration, license plate and a door jam VIN waiting for a new place to call home. Last year I was thinking about putting a truck together with the parts I had laying around and went to the DMV (nevada) for advice. I had a 1980 frame and 85 cab. I had title for both and the 85 was currently registered to me. The legal way to do that swap in nevada is to turn in both titles, the DMV will assign a brand new VIN which they install and the truck would be registered as a special construction with the model year being when it was built. In my case it would have been a 2012 model year. Way too much BS. I decided would be easier to keep the registration with the cab, swap frames had hope the frame VIN never sees the light of day. Even though I also had the title to the frame, it was not in my name and when I sell it the next owner won't have that title. I am willing to bet there are a lot if trucks out there with mystery VIN numbers. Who actually goes to the trouble to climb under and check the frame number (if you can even find it) Only ones who do that I know of is the DMV (here in nevada they do) but only if it's an out of state vehicle. My good friend had his 1982 toyota pickup stolen way back in 1986 while living in so. cal where we all grew up. He got a call from Las Vegas Metro police in 2005 that they had recovered his toyota. Some ***icans had tried to register/title it at the Nevada DMV and since it was an out of state vehicle they did a VIN inspection. Stolen! Somebody had registered and driven that truck for 19 years and like 200,000 miles in California and never had an issue. The VIN was never changed on the truck and did not match the registration but was not checked for 19 years till they moved to another state. Crazy.,

Re: What year is my truck!?
Hate to bring up an old thread but I stumbled upon a useful piece of info while painting some crap under the hood getting ready to drop my new motor in. Turns out my frame matches the cab. All along I've been drivin a '76 jimmy. Only thing Chevy about it is the bed. I did a little digging an I'm almost positive it's not stolen, but who knows around here.
At least I finally have a solid readable number on the truck. So...now what...? I guess I can just forget about it. The missing vin tag still worries me, but if they really want to give me hell about it at least I've actually got proof it's mine.

Couple questions: a) So where is this stamp located? Underhood somewhere? b) What makes you think that is a Jimmy VIN? c) You know that a Blazer/Jimmy is a shorter wheelbase than even a shortbox pickup, right? So - it would take some serious modifications to put a pickup cab/box combo on an original Jimmy frame. In the spirit of full disclosure I should tell you that partial VIN T61522800 decodes as follows: T= GMC truck 6 = model year ('76) 1 = Build plant Oshawa (Blazers/Jimmys were built only in Flint) 522800 = sequential portion of VIN, GMCs started at 500001. http://service.gm.com/dealerworld/vi.../vincard76.pdf K

Re: What year is my truck!?
Stamp is located on the passenger rail by the fuel pump. And yeah, I guess here in these parts we refer to old school gmc's as "Jimmy's"

Re: What year is my truck!?
Huh, I would have thought it was more common. G-M-C --> Jimmy-C --> Jimmy. Also "Screamin' Jimmy" from the days of the -71/-V71/-V92 Detroit Diesel music players.
Yes, today when I hear Jimmy what comes to mind is either S-series or C-/K-/R-/V- series, but I can't forget my Dad saying Jimmy and meaning something else.
